I think it's a good hire for GT. I remember Nell very well when she coached Auburn.

She'll bring some stability and respectability to the program, and she may well be the best-qualified candidate in their search.

But Nell also did it at Purdue.

So a person who retired less than 8 months ago has been out of coaching for so long she probably forgot how (Carolyn Peck) but a person who has not coached since 2012 is a good hire?

Nell Fortner did college volleyball broadcasts (she played both sports in college) in addition to basketball. Surprised to see her go back into coaching because being an announcer/studio host seems like such a good gig. Low hours and no pressure. I don’t know what the pay is, but per-hour it’s probably great. But I guess the money can’t match what coaches get. And it’s a challenge and competition, but after 7 years I would think those fires were cooled down.

I don't know how well she will do at GaTech, but that Purdue record is better than the numbers make it seem. She took over a team reeling from the Lin Dunn disaster and that had four returning players. She added a track star and held open try-outs on campus to try to find warm bodies to put on the team. The season started out rough, then she somehow pulled out 12 conference wins, made the NCAAs, and took runner-up ODU to overtime in the second round. It was a coaching performance for the ages, and without her holding the team together like she did there is no way Purdue wins the title two years later.

Her total winning percentage, heavily inflated by Team USA, is about the same as Gail Goestenkors winning percentage at Texas.

Gail Goestenkors' records at her various head coaching stints/jobs:
--- Overall at Duke: 396-99 (.800)
--- Overall at Texas: 102-64 (.614)
--- Overall with USA Basketball: 14-1 (.933) -- 1997 Jones Cup; 2005 FIBA Americas U19
--- Overall as a head coach (college): 498–163 (.753)
--- Overall as a head coach (college and Team USA): 512–164 (.757)

Pilight, I am not sure what using a person's entire career (including Team USA) to compare it to another coach's one college stop (while ignoring her other college coaching job, which was significantly longer) was intended to demonstrate, unless it was intended to demonstrate that Nell Fortner required a significant amount of wins with Team USA to get to the percentage of Gail Goestenkors at Texas, which, while it involved NCAATs every year, did not reach the expectations upon her hiring and is considered disappointing (especially when compared to what she accomplished at Duke).

That's what I was getting at. Fortner's record seems impressive, but would be lackluster for a school expecting to be making deep tournament runs.

Ah, gotcha. I took the scenic route, but I got to the point you were trying to make.

But PUMatty's note about the 1996-1997 Purdue squad is also interesting. Would be curious to see what would have happened had she stayed there.

Thanks. Who knows if they'll look at any of those candidates though Smile? Baranczyk was someone who came to mind right away for me but I"m not sure she'll want to leave Drake. I believe Des Moines is her hometown and her parents live there also - with 3 young kids that may be a draw to stay there.

Collen has lots of past college coaching experience but not sure she'd leave the WNBA for Marquette.

Boggess is the assistant I'd prefer if they were to hire one of Kieger's assistants.

I remember reading an article that the coaches (Nell, Carolyn Peck, Pam Stackhouse and Kerry Cremeans were watching tape of an incoming recruit (Diamond Desmond maybe) and on the tape was another player that impressed them. They made contact and the player hadn't been recruited and ended up going to Purdue. That player was Michelle Duhart.
