Is Oregon Associate Head Coach Mark Campbell a potential candidate?

The guy responsible for recruiting Ionescu and the reputed strategic brains for the duck WBB program. If you look in the huddles during time-outs he’s the one doing the coaching while Graves watches.

^^^^ THAT, people, is a joke. Nothing more than speculation, just like on this list. "Insider"? No more so than anywhere else.

Harper and maybe Mitchell I will buy. Peck has been out of coaching for so long she's probably forgotten how. Lawson has never coached nor has she ever expressed an interest in coaching. It's more like somebody's "wish list", and not a very good one at that.

While we're throwing out names, did anyone mention Aaron Johnson?

The RTI staff have minimal links to Lady Vol basketball. Other than cursory score-reporting, they haven't written squat about the team all year until the coaching change became newsworthy. The same is true of some of these other "journalists" and radio personalities that are being quoted and of most of the pundits currently wasting bandwidth on VN.

Minnesota hired Whalen. That is a comparable situation to Lawson/TN.

The article is a pros/cons analysis. Nothing wrong with doing that for potential candidates. Happens in men's hoops and the NBA all the time.

If you question/criticize the list for being a "joke" and "[n]othing more than speculation," then how does Johnson fit?

Johnston would be a good coach in the South during the Confederacy era..but I think he'd get run out of town down there nowadays if he sticks with his recruiting philosophy...

Wasn't the broadcaster to head coach of a P5 school thing already tried and failed?

Minnesota hiring Whalen is similar only in that they both played in the WNBA. However, I believe that Kara’s been retired to the broadcast booth for a bit while Lindsay did not retire until after she took the reins.

Aaron Johnston (sorry about the misspelling) fits about as well as some of the other coaches from out of the region whose names have been thrown at us. He’s at least a proven winner.

Has Dawn ever comented on what Bill Cosby did to her staffer?

Minnesota hiring Whalen is similar to TN/Lawson in that both had long WNBA careers and won WNBA titles, both are considered legends and among the most visible graduates of their respective programs, both are considered cerebral players with a good understanding of playmaking, Xs and Os, etc. (in part because of their respectively play at the PG position), both had zero coaching experience, etc.

He is a winner. Absolutely.

He has been at SDSU in some coaching capacity since 1997. I did not see any connection to TN or the Southeast.

But is he deserving of a phone call and a possible interview? Absolutely.

It would be interesting if KL did take the job and because she has NO experience in coaching, hired HW as an assistant? HW was a great assistant!

John Brice is STILL basically just a sports gossip columnist. Don't pretend he's anything else.

So I want to see the same outcry from people about how Lawson has no experience and this would be a slap in the face to the profession as other male and female hires......if not, that's a total double standard and ya'll are bush league for life...

Unlike say Whalen, Lawson has always had a coaching mentality. She did recently coach a young 3x3 team to a gold medal.

Minnesota hiring Whalen is not the same as Tennessee hiring Lawson...Minnesota does not have the history and expectations of Tennessee. If the Golden Gophers miss the NCAA tournament as they did this season, no one's going to question Whalen's coaching ability. If Lawson misses the tournament next season, some of the Lady Vol fan base and media will question Lawson's hiring.

Since it seems highly unlikely that Walz, Mulkey, or Frese are coming to Tenn, the question is where Kara stacks up against Harper, Balcomb, Peck, or some of the other names mentioned as being interviewed. If that's the pool she's up against, I'd favor hiring Kara. I might even favor her over Close, Ivey, or Meier, but I haven't read that Fulmer actually has them under consideration.

Minnesota has history too. Ancient history, but that’s what got Whalen hired. As far as expectations, I’m in Minnesota and who has more expectations than me? People in Minnesota have as much pride as people in Tennessee.

I’ve been questioning it since the hire. But that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t get a few years to try to get the program rolling. That’s pretty standard. Who gets fired after one year? Nobody.... especially in women’s basketball, which is not a money-maker for any school.

So what, they can question all they want. Sounds like you already have low expectations for Lawson.

You realize there is no " coaching" permitted during 3x3 games. No coach is present on the sideline, making substitutions, designing or calling out plays, directing defenses, motivating, or doing other "coach" things. Nor of course is there any recruiting. So the relevance of this to being a head coach at Tennessee is approximately zero.

And the pool of candidates likely to be interested in the job is entirely different. Tennessee can attract the interest of candidates who would be unlikely to give Minnesota the time of day.

In general, I like experienced coaches to be hired, but Lawson wouldn't be a bad call for Tennessee.

If she fails, then the dreams of glory will finally be blown away by the harsh reality of the game today, and Tennessee can rebuild from the ground up with an experienced coach with (maybe) no Tennessee ties. The expectations would be realistic, which would be a major step forward, I think.

If she succeeds, it's a win-win.
