In a statement, the university said that the Charlotte-based firm Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein will conduct a “review and assess the culture of the women’s basketball program and the experience of our student-athletes.”

This review comes after UNC received issues raised by student-athletes and others regarding the women’s basketball program

Honestly, how much longer can they keep Hatchell around?

UNC is elite in nearly every women's sport (soccer, field hockey, lacrosse) and yet hopelessly mediocre in women's hoop.

North Carolina women’s basketball coaches under internal investigation
https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/article228692854.html

Excerpt (form above link):

The North Carolina women’s basketball coaching staff has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation after complaints were brought up by players and others, the school said in a press release.

That includes head coach Sylvia Hatchell and her three assistants, a spokesperson confirmed.

That's big. And way overdue. I suspect the transfer train finally caught up with them.

Yup!

OTOH, should each coach start buying diapers? These kids are a bunch of babies. Hatchell has coached for 30+ years and this happens now? Christ Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I suspect it is a way to fire her for cause rather than buy out her contract.

Her contract runs through 2020, so it is not a huge buyout. But yes, if she is fired with cause, there is no buyout.

Will Hatchell's rabid homophobia FINALLY enter the public (& unacceptable) realm? A "straight but not narrow" Duke alum's parents reported 20 years ago that Hatchell came into their living room and promised their daughter would be "protected" from "the gays" at her program, unlike the two programs (Duke and NC State) down the road. TWENTY years ago!!! The parents also reported they knew instantly UNC was not the right program for their daughter and they were all very happy with Duke. I repeat that this student-athlete was - and is - straight but their family does not tolerate bigotry of any kind.

So Georgia Tech and UNC hire outside professionals but Duke had an "in-house" investigation????? Does ANYBODY wonder why Duke did not find sufficient evidence of abuse to warrant action?

And, to answer ucbart, this is absolutely NOT about expecting "coddling." This is about verbal and emotional abuse. When a coach says "not only are you not good enough to take the floor, but you're not good enough for medical school and God forbid becoming a doctor," that has crossed into verbal/emotional abuse.

This is WAY different from "until you learn to play defense, you're not getting on the floor." Or even "you're too lazy to play on my team." That's called telling the truth. For some players, blunt truth is exactly what makes them put forth more effort. If a player expects more gentle wording instead of blunt truth, then THAT is "expecting to be coddled." And in the case of Hatchell, her rabid homophobia (think Rene Portland) goes WAY WAY over the line and has for over 20 years.

Duke didn't want to find such evidence. No company or organization authorizes an "investigation" without knowing what's going to be found, regardless of whether it's internal or done by outside professionals.

We sure it's tied to the normal conduct and that she isn't STILL steering kids to iffy classes?

Losing Watts might have been the nail in the coffin. Unless Mohammed from Ole Miss can step up (she’s talented) and Bailey can carry them, I expect losing Kea and Watts will doom them next year.

Methinks UNC is trying to push their Naismith HOFer out the door.

This is apparently not due to homophobia, academic cheating, the transfer train, or demands on the players.

Per a local television station on Twitter:
Players say UNC women's basketball coach used a racially insensitive remark and complain of lack of quality coaching. @joelbrown reports on the suspension of Sylvia Hatchell and her staff - live at 11.

Is there a difference between racially insensitive and outright racist comments?

I'd be interested to know about the coaching complaints because these days it seems a lot of complaints seem to stem from being coached as the coach determines their system as opposed to how the players decide they want to be coached.

When Hillary Howard was being recruited, she was told by Hatchell that she should not play for Duke because of all of the lesbians in Duke's program. Howard picked Duke anyway and was the starting PG on the 1999 Final Four team.

Hatchell also tried to present excessive gifts to recruits, who turned them down (e.g., Chante Black).

And Hatchell would recruit players who had given verbal commitments or even signed letters of intent to other schools (e.g., Keturah Jackson).

I'm not saying the investigation shouldn't be carried out, but UNC is 19-45 in the ACC over the past four years, with a revolving door of players transferring. Hatchell only has one year left on her contract. Why not just fire her for her on-court performance, clean house, and move on?

Hibby's parents told me this story completely unsolicited by me. Hatchell came into their living room and told them their daughter would be "safe from the gays" at UNC and she could not say the same for Duke or NC State. DIRECT GAY BAITING. Hillary (Hibby) and her parents are "straight but not narrow" and also self-described as "going in the opposite direction from bigots (like Hatchell)."

Hibby and her parents could all contribute to this investigation. A recruit who chose NOT to attend UNC due to Hatchell's bigotry. Most bigots don't have just one group they target - there's blacks, browns, gays, Jews, Muslims, etc, etc, etc

I've heard rumors for years (but no direct report) of UNC recruits finding a "sack of cash" on the seat when they were picked up for their recruiting visit.

North Carolina is playing with fire putting Hatchel on paid leave. If they are not careful the Tenn Vols will hire her right out from under them.

FWIW, posters on the Carolina WBB board suggest that there is an issue with medical staff, player injury status and coaches wanting (pressuring) injured players to play.
