I didn't realize the players also painted them green back in 1997 or that it was Mollie Peirick's idea. I thought it was just McGraw that year and that the players all did it the following year.

I remember being at the FF in Cincy and people running around wanting to paint everyone's nails green.

Someone approached Father Jenkins and Father Malloy. Jenkins allowed his pinky, but Monk didn't want any part of it.

Yeah, I could see that. Back when McGraw had male assistants, they'd paint one pinky.

For those who don't know, Fr. Edward "Monk" Malloy was ND's president from 1987-2005. He got the position when the legendary Fr. Hesburgh retired (after 35 years), but was originally going to be an interim president until someone else was found. Many alumni consider him one of the main reasons why ND Football has stumbled since 1993.

Monk was known for having a stick up his you-know-what, although there was one famous prank where a student tricked him into posing for a picture with him while the both of them made the "shocker" hand gesture. When it was posted online, it ended up getting removed fairly quickly once people in the administration figured out what gesture meant... Wink
