How are these teams chosen? There are just a few teams from very few conferences.

You have to wonder with all the WNIT declines, how much coaches/programs see the value in participating in these "other" post season tournaments. It's a long season. They started the NCAAWB season a week or so early. They're tired and injured and these student athletes perhaps need a (spring) break.

On the other hand, it's a few more days or a few more weeks of practice that can be focused on returning players.

I was reading about Rice and noticed they won in 2016-2017, Langley's second year as coach. The next year they were invited to the NIT. This year, conference champions and NCAA Tournament! Seems like it was a useful step for Langley and her young players in rebuilding that program.
