Eh, having taken Cal to its first and only Final Four probably also has something to do with her job retention, I would certainly imagine. |
That Final Four is getting further and further away. If they don't make the NCAA's this year, then it's not a good sign with this senior class. Next year will even tougher. |
and that final four was with inherited players. Since then, she's recruited some talent, but not done much with it. |
The recruitment left when Morrison left.

I haven't checked this but my impression is that coaches and media pre-conference season P-12 polls have had Cal finishing higher than they have done for the past few years most if not all the time. They really haven't met expectations for a while. The Final Four year was too long ago to matter that much now, and if next year shapes up as it looks like it will, they may have some serious problems going forward. They haven't won big with talent, and the talent level has gradually slipped, aside from the greatness of Anigwe. Next year the talent level will probably be much less in an improving conference. They could be near the bottom.

I guess my original citation of Gottlieb's Final Four run was a response to the implication that Gottlieb only has her job today due to the fact that she's a nice person who has good rapport with players and administration... as though she'd be long-fired had she the same record while being a jerk, and disliked. Since the Final Four year (which, yes, was a while ago: 2012-13), Gottlieb has taken Cal to the NCAA Tournament every single year but one. Does that really get a women's basketball coach fired from Cal?

A Minnesota sports team chokes again! Some things never change! Gophers WBB, along with our other teams, are like our bridges and stadium roofs—famous for collapsing! Gopher WBB probably will miss the NCAA Tournament now because they are the only team in all of college sports too stupid to know how to inbound the ball! #OUTRAGE

And RPI will award Maryland as many points as if they had actually played a good game.

Indiana is tied with Iowa with 4 minutes left to play ( on TV on the BTN) Gustafson has 4 fouls.
Indiana is a different team with Patberg playing.

Wow! IU goes up 2 with 3.8 seconds to go. Iowa to inbound at midcourt when play resumes.

Trailing by 5 at the half Tenn got outscored by 15 in the 3rd and trail 62-42.
A&M led by Wells with 30 after 3 while Carter, cold as ice in the first half started hitting. Between those 2 they lead Tenn 49-42.
Tenn needs players who can handle the ball and pass. The only thing they are really good at is offensive rebounding.

JMU went to Elon and administered a beating, 74-46. It could have been worse, but Coach O'Regan chose to play the back bench for a good part of the game, and Eleanore Marciszewski had kind of an off night shooting. Kamiah Smalls, however, did not, as she was one of 4 Dukes in double figures and shot !00% in the first half.
I feel kind of sorry for Elon coach Charlotte Smith this season. She lost the best part of her team to graduation plus a transfer, and then had an expected star go down with an ACL early on. However, I know they'll be back to torment everyone next season.
Meanwhile, just to complicate everything further, Drexel beat UNCW, William & Mary (the team that can't get out of its own way) somehow managed to hang on and beat Towson, and in a battle for the basement, College of Charleston lost to Delaware.

Oklahoma 71 West Virginia 56 - 4:20 left to play
This could be a very big loss for the Mountaineers who seemed safely in the field. Now their game at Kansas St on Wednesday becomes very important.
