Problem is that they'd probably also have to play for less cash than they're used to...

Jewell Loyd is still a young player who is smart, coachable, highly skilled, and an All-Star. If the premise is that it's somehow a disaster for her to bring the ball up a few times because she's not a True Point Guard, why would any of those vets who are also not point guards take off the 'ballhandling pressure?'

Yes, based solely on the numbers, we're short of guard depth right now, but let's not make this a bigger problem than it is. Of course losing Bird to injury would be a problem, but that's always been the case.

Signing Quinn was a good move last year because they didn’t have a strong backup to Bird, but by drafting and seeing how Canada did in her rookie transition, that safety net is no longer needed.

I'm by no means saying it's a huge problem. The only player you're not bringing back from a championship squad was on the end of the bench and got regular DNP-CDs. Just saying that Quinn was the insurance policy and useful to have because she could play three spots and Bird is always liable to miss occasional games (even if she isn't definitively 'injured').

Those vets would take ballhandling pressure off Loyd because you could play them with Loyd, and two half-a-point-guards on the floor makes things easier than having only one out there. Whitcomb can maybe kinda do a bit of that at best, Clark really doesn't, so someone else Hughes can half-trust to do that stuff might be useful. And probably a safer bet than a third-round rookie (or equivalent) who most nights won't play at all.

well, that last qualifier probably knocks Cappie out of the competition.

We don't even know if our first-round pick will make the team, let alone third.

Roll the ball out, pretty much.

I’m guessing draft a guard at #12, unless they’d rather draft competition for Russell and sign a cheap FA guard.

If Paris doesn’t have a guaranteed contract, she’d be a decent dump of salary cap.

In years past, I believe Langhorne was cored and made the max. Anything is possible, but it does seem likely she was signed to a max contract as an unrestricted free agent this year. Given Paris was signed as a free agent last year to 2 year contract, it is good guess that her spot is guaranteed this year. Seattle's roster problem are the bloated (in more ways than one) salaries of KML and Paris, who were pretty much absent from meaningful minutes in the playoffs last year. Highlighting this dead money (particularly Paris), I don't think any team would take them for free, especially at these salaries. There are a few players like this (Camille Little comes to mind) who are finishing guaranteed high salary contracts, and most likely are done in the league after this season.....BTW not sure KML contract guaranteed.

Good point, Canada. They did core Langhorne. I’m going to adjust her up to $118K. That would make even less money available for a free agent.

Also have to wonder if they'll consider bringing back Tokashiki?

PG: Bird/Canada
SG: Loyd/Whitcomb/#12 pick
SF: Clark/Mosqueda-Lewis
PF: Stewart/Langhorne
C: Howard/Paris
12th spot: Russell/Tokashiki/#24 pick

Remember when Sue Bird would take over in the timeout huddles for the Storm (maybe it was mostly in the playoffs), while Dan Hughes would be grabbing a broom and sweeping up in the background?

Well, it sounds like the same kind of thing was happening with Team USA.

I think that the Storm have a long term plan to make Sue Bird their head coach. I think they brought Hughes out of retirement to be a mentor and allow her to learn from him. He is obviously not going to stay long term because, well, he was retired. My guess is that they lured him back for a few years with the idea that Sue would take over when she retires, but in the meantime, she could learn from him. The Nuggets from office gig is just another way for Sue to learn. We shall see if I am prophetic. Smile

SB 5930 just passed the Washington Senate. It would create official Storm license plates,

I'm beginning to think Bridget Carleton would be a good fit for the Storm. Can play 1-2-3 positions. Solid shooter. Possibly replace Clark in the starting line-up in a few years.

Who's spot is she going to take this season though? Carleton is a baller but I'm not sold on her being a future WNBA starter. Maybe a 6th woman max.

She can push KML out of the rotation.

That looks pretty good but it also kind of depends whether you think Russell is a project worth committing to, or if you even care that much about size considering they didn't really play Russell or Paris that much in the playoffs.

Then Seattle finds themselves in the same conversation as the Liberty are they better served to go post round 1 and G/W in the second. I haven't seen Carleton enough to have an opinion on her but Seattle could just as easily get someone like Shepard, Gustafson, Turner or even Smith in the first round, and still have someone like Cazorla, Heideman, Blockton, Dillard, Mabrey, Bell (pr possibly even Carleton I am not sure how high profile she is).

So while I think the team listed above looks great how does is it compare to say

Bird/Canada/Cazorla
Loyd/Whitcomb
Clark/KML
Stewart/Langhorne
Howard/Paris/Gustafson

No neeed to kick KML out we will take her off your hands gladly. Maybe a change of scenary will do her well.

Oh. Magbegor not reporting until 2020. I guess it makes sense, since she's only 19.

They’ve left themselves thin amongst the ball handlers (Macy Miller?) Hughes did hint that they weren’t done.
