Is there any concern or interest at St John's that they're in 9th place with a losing record?
They have a good history. It's a shame where they have fallen.
Georgetown is in basically the same boat and I think the answer in DC is "no". By all appearances they're just going through the motions. Just fielding a team, not really trying to be good. And no one even seems to notice, much less care.
BTW, today SJU lost to Villanova and Georgetown lost to Seton Hall. Neither game was particularly close. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......... |
I can't speak to whether anyone cares about how these teams are doing. But Xavier is the one in the BE that's really getting to me - they were so good years ago under Melanie Balcomb. And they are really bad now and have been for awhile - I think they need a coaching change there.
Creighton and Villanova are doing worse than I expected this year also. Although this is just a one year dip for them and not a long-term thing.
Providence on the other hand is doing better than I had expected along with Butler (although they had a tough weekend with DePaul and Marquette visiting).
I also find it interesting that there's only one female head coach in the Big East. I'm not saying schools that are struggling would do better if they had a female coach, it's just something I find interesting...

The highlight of the OhSU at Minnesota game so far is Bello's rebounding. She has ten midway thru the second qtr. Otherwise this game showcases really bad teams.
But the pregame show with Vera Jones was a hoot. I always enjoy her.

WVU 38-27 lead at Texas. Texas demonstrating why they really, really are not the #12 team in the country.

Does Dan Hughes always commentate like he's a Texas fan? He keep saying, "if only they would...." Also, is Joyner Holmes totally over-rated? I know she was injured earlier in the season but she looks fat and out of shape and her shot is so flat it makes a flat tire look round.

Wasn't the prevailing view here that Ohio St was horrible and McGuff a total failure, while Minn was a Big10 contender and Whalen a savior, back at a time when Minnesota had scheduled its way to a gaudy record and a silly undeserved #12 poll ranking?
And Minn hasn't even played Maryland or IU or Rutgers yet.

Well Texas strategy was to see if they could foul the whole WV team out. Both bigs fouled out early in the 4th quarter. But Texas made enough stupid mistakes to still lose.

Vandy leading at SoCaro at halftime: 40-38
|
well SoCaro did win 80-69 but it wasn't pretty. |
The USC reserves have a lot of freshman and sophomores like Henderson, Williams, Saxton, Grissett, and Jackson, but it also has players like Cliney who has a ton of career starts, and Perry who once was a leading scorer for Clemson before transferring to Columbia, but the group of reserves need to greatly improve their contributions.
Staley has a long-held practice of giving the starters major rest to start the 2nd periods (or once around mid-point of 1st halves, before there were periods), and to end games if the lead is substantial. She rarely deviates from this practice unless the team is trailing or in a tight contest.
But the reserves usually kill whatever momentum the starters have generated, with turnovers, fouls, and poor shooting. It happened again tonight: Vandy out-scored the Gamecocks in the 2nd period to take the halftime lead, and then after the starters stormed back in the 2nd half, and got USC up by 19 points, Staley brought in the reserves for the final 4 minutes, and they were promptly out-scored by Vanderbilt 8-0 to end the game. They went 0 for 5 and had 3 TOs in that span.
So the final outcome wasn't indicative of how the game mostly went. The USC bench only scored 9 pts for the game. They are young mostly, so hopefully they will develop as time progresses. Grissett and Saxton are talents that show flashes of being all-conference caliber players before they are done. Grissett didn't do much this game, and Saxton only scored 4 pts off the bench but had 8 rebounds in 13 minutes to lead the team...

Dan is always a big Sooner Homer whenever he announces OK games, too!
Yes, Joyner is NOT LIVING up to expectations--that's already been established. The "why" is a mystery to most. She clearly had an outstanding freshman season, but has declined, between injuries and 'other' time away, she has not seemed dedicated to making the best of herself.
Re: the WVU game--also historically established is the fact that Mike Carey is NEVER EVER to be counted out. He's a great example of a craftsman at making some Not-Fab players play TOUGH.
He beats Iowa State, loses to TCU....unpredictable, but not SURPRISING that they beat TX tonight. (Ya gotta look harder at the box score, Murtle)
TX - 40 rebounds WVU - 27. Hmmm. TX TOs - 21 WVU - 12. Posts Joyner and Jatarie scored 31 points. BUT Tynice Marten explodes for 27 herself. Threes? TX: 1 - 13, WVU: 7-17. (Ya think TX misses Higgs? )
Is a #12 high for Texas? Now, certainly. Not 9 or 10 weeks ago....the picture changes.
Now. I want a DETAILED explanation of why STANFORD lost to YOUTAWW!
