Quote:
Williams did that with a dominant start that set the tone for the rest of the game. She scored 16 of her game-high 28 points in the first quarter, including eight points on layups. She also hit two 3-pointers in the opening period. She made things very difficult for No. 1 Notre Dame, which fell to No. 2 UConn 89-71 at Purcell Pavilion.

Also nominated: Napheesa Collier (UConn); Chandler Smith (Gonzaga)

Jenna Allen scored 27 points to lead unranked Michigan State to a 88-82 upset of No. 3 Oregon on Sunday. With that, the senior earned the espnW national player of the week honors. She also had 16 points and four rebounds in the Spartans' 102-58 victory over Oakland on Wednesday.

Smith, a 6-foot-4 Australian, made 7 of 12 shots and is shooting 57.8 percent from the field this season, including 50 percent from 3-point range (21 of 42). She is averaging 18.5 points and 6.4 rebounds. Games like Saturday's make her WNBA stock continue to rise.

congrats to her. But I think this was her best game. She showed it at the right time since apparently there were pro scouts in the house to look at Kalani. But Alanna has not been the model of consistency. I'm thinking a second round pick. We'll see how she does the rest of the year.

Quote:
Oregon closed its nonconference season with a flourish. Guard Sabrina Ionescu had her 13th and 14th triple-doubles. And will no doubt add to her NCAA record once the Pac-12 season begins.

Nobody in women's or men's college basketball has mastered the triple-double like Ionescu has, and she's just a junior. Ionescu led the way in victories over Mississippi State, Air Force and UC Irvine for the 11-1 Ducks and is the espnW national player of the week.

Also nominated: Arike Ogunbowale, Notre Dame; Napheesa Collier, UConn; Megan Gustafson, Iowa; Katie Lou Samuelson, UConn; Alanna Smith, Stanford

It's probably going to be Arike, but I think Tiana Mangakahia should get some consideration.

Quote:
Cierra Dillard put on a show last postseason, leading Buffalo to the Sweet 16. And the guard is still lighting up the scoreboard for the Bulls.

Dillard scored a school-record 43 points and added five rebounds and five assists Wednesday in leading Buffalo over Eastern Michigan 91-84 in overtime. The game was a display of great guard play, as Dillard's counterpart for Eastern Michigan, Danielle Minott, also scored -- believe it or not -- 43 points.

Then Saturday in a 66-59 victory at Miami (Ohio), Dillard had 26 points, five rebounds and 10 assists. Those back-to-back performances earned the 5-foot-9 senior espnW national player of the week honors.

Also nominated: Reyna Frost, Central Michigan; Natisha Hiedeman, Marquette; Tiana Mangakahia, Syracuse; Bre Kavanaugh, Fordham; Aari McDonald, Arizona; Satou Sabally, Oregon; Alanna Smith, Stanford

In the 85-59 victory at Auburn on Monday, she had 22 points -- going 9-of-10 from the field -- 10 rebounds and three blocks. But her biggest game of the week was against the rival Gamecocks.

McCowan stepped up big against S.C., as usual, with 26 points, a season-high 24 rebounds and two blocked shots. It was the fifth 20-20 game of her career. She was 9-of-15 from the field and 8-of-9 from the foul line.

All that Kristen Anigwe did this weekend was score 59 points and get 41 rebounds in two games. Interesting that 3 other Pac 12 players were given "also considered" status.

I missed this last week - cool to see Natisha Hiedeman in the also considered section. She's had an incredible BE season so far and glad to see it has gotten some attention.

I’ve been trying to get her some attention in the WNBA draft section, saying she would be a better choice at PG than Paris Kea, a favorite of some people.

Thanks. I was wondering about her chances in the WNBA and really had no idea - not sure about Blockton either. For this year, Hiedeman looks like she might keep the BE POY honor with Marquette as Blockton has missed too much time to repeat this year.

Congratulations to T! I'm glad I got to see the game vs SCar. She had as many rebounds as the entire SCar team.

She's a talent. If Marquette goes deep into the NCAAs, I can see her name going up ahead of Kea.

There are now 2 players winning this award, Kea & Williams, for performances against Notre Dame. It is perhaps revealing that both players were guarded primarily by Ogunbowale. Looks like Arike is spending more time planning her TV career than in practicing defense.

After two more performances in which Gustafson showed that she'll score no matter how teams guard her or how many defenders they use to do it, she is the espnW national player of the week. Gustafson has been on our "also considered" list almost every week this season, which is understandable considering she leads Division I in scoring (27.2 PPG), is second in field goal percentage (70.4) and is tied for fifth in rebounding (12.7).
