Jim Souhan: Cheryl Reeve would be Timberwolves' pick for head coach
Quote: |
Candidate 1: 52-year-old four-time WNBA champion head coach. Two-time WNBA Coach of the Year. Four years as college head coach, improving the team’s winning percentage each year. Nine years as WNBA assistant coach, winning two league titles. Two-time All-Star Game head coach. Currently Lynx general manager as well as head coach. Rhodes Scholar nominee. Key figure in USA Basketball.
Candidate 2: 32-year-old with no previous head coaching experience. Hired by father to assistant coaching positions with two NBA teams.
The age of Candidate 2, Saunders, shouldn’t be seen as disqualifying, but his lack of experience would keep him from being a serious head coaching candidate for any other NBA franchise, and possibly for the Wolves if they hadn’t needed to make a midseason change. |

We're such a long way from a fair world, whether in basketball or any other part of human life. But articles like this get us one step closer. Thanks for posting this provocative piece.

In a fair basketball world going from a four time WNBA champ to a perennial NBA loser wouldn't be seen as a step up

It's all about the money. A NBA head coach gets paid a LOT more money than a WNBA head coach.

The author of the article is a giant Reeve kiss-up, who never asks any actual questions about the Lynx, moves made, etc, even though he has no problem being critical of any teams coached by men.
The Wolves almost have the same record as the Lynx did last year, which is more fuel for the idea that Reeve isn't anything special and didn't win anything for the Lynx—the Lynx having more talent than all the other teams (until Reeve decided to get rid of the Lynx's top younger talent so other teams would be better than the Lynx) did. Reeve could be coach of the Warriors these past years and they'd have fewer titles than they've had so far, if any.
If Reeve ran the Wolves like the Lynx, she'd never play Towns and want him to be gotten rid of for a 2nd round pick or less, because Towns is too young to have ever deserved any minutes in his career, or a max contract, and she'd never play Tyus Jones because he's too young too.

Coaching women is different than coaching men, in a variety of subtle and not-so-subtle ways.
Learning those differences as a head coach, especially in the NBA, simply doesn't make sense.

In a fair basketball world, talent would be more evenly distributed so Cheryl Reeve's coaching would have looked quite different over the past several years.
