Round 13
Canberra & Adelaide's great form continued. They're looking the 2 best teams right now. The other 2 playoff participants - Melbourne & Perth - faced each other and it was pretty ugly stuff, with Melbourne getting it done in the end despite missing O'Hea (personal reasons).
In the bottom half, Dandenong got a couple of wins, while Sydney's rotten luck continued with a hamstring injury to Smart, and then an ankle sprain to Graham during today's TV game.
Adelaide 110 (Nicholson 20p, Blicavs 15p 5a, Seekamp 14p 5r 9a, Alexander 14p 6r, Davidson 13p 5r, Coffey 12p 9r 4a, Clydesdale 9p, Taia 8p 5r, Planeta 3p 9r)

So Magbegor got the start because O’Hea was out? Seemed to work out okay for the team and Magbegor’s stat line.

Yep.
Perth is a good match up for her (we have no size - she was on Asia Taylor or Kayla Steindl most of the time), but credit where it's due, she made the most of it.

Round 14
Penultimate round of regular season play.
Canberra powered onward, this time led by Leilani Mitchell. Perth returned to some form by beating Melbourne fairly comfortably, despite Brittany McPhee being on a 15 FGA brick streak.
Bendigo took Adelaide to OT before eventually falling. Coffey's 37 points is the highest score this season. The extra effort seemed to take its toll on Adelaide, who struggled in the 2nd half of the tv game against Melbourne after looking very good early.
Sydney's horrible injury curse somehow got even worse, with Tahlia Tupaea going down in today's game with a knee injury.
Townsville scored a rare Batkovic-less road win, upsetting Dandenong. Suzy is still not healthy, but will apparently play next weekend when the Fire host the Flames. It will be both Belinda Snell and Suzy Batkovic's final WNBL games.
Home court is now set, with the only remaining variable being Perth & Adelaide fighting for 3rd place, which will be the TV game next weekend.
Bendigo 81 [OT] (Payne 21p, Wehrung 16p 5r, Tomlinson 14p, Whittle 12p 5r, Hurst 7p 7r 8a, Tobin 6p 10r 7a 4s 3b)

Ezi seems to be getting more playing time. Certainly helps her draft stock as her stats are filling up (slightly).

Good minutes again vs (height-deficient) Perth, and probably her best stat line of the season.
But 2 days later @ Adelaide in the TV game she played only 8 minutes due to foul trouble.

Magbegor had foul trouble, but they were also back to not starting her again.
Seems like she did well when she got the starts. Something to keep in mind.
This coach might be one who likes going with experienced players over young players or thinks they’re more deserving. I wonder how she’d be doing if she were at a team that gave her consistent starts.

Round 15
Just one game each to finish off the regular season, which was a nice piece of scheduling.
In the main event, it was Adelaide storming home from a huge deficit to take Perth to OT and claim the win, led by Nia Coffey. That gives them 3rd place on the ladder and a semi final matchup with Melbourne. Perth will play Canberra.
A massively undermanned Bendigo also lost in OT, 2OT actually, after leading against Canberra for most of the game. OT has been cruel to the Spirit this season.
Melbourne won the derby against Dandenong thanks to Lindsay Allen & Maddie Garrick, while Suzy Batkovic's Fire took the honours against Belinda Snell's Flames in the battle of the retirees.
Bendigo 97 [2OT] (Wehrung 30p 4a, Hurst 27p, Whittle 15p 6r, McLean 7p 5r, Tomlinson 4p 5r 8a 3b)
Canberra 101 (Tolo 27p 10r, Griffin 24p 20r 3s 3b, Wilson 12p 6r 9a, Nurse 12p, Rocci 11p 4a, Scherf 8p 5r, Mitchell 5p 9a)

Dandenong 78 (Cole 26p 5a 3s, Laney 24p 5r, Mijovic 14p 6r, Pedersen 7p 5r)

George was out? Magbegor got the start even with O’Hea being back, but looked to be saddled with foul trouble. Is it 5 fouls for a DQ in WNBL?

Correct.
All the playoff games (semis and finals are best of 3) are televised this season, so you'll be able to see Ezi at least twice.
Melbourne-Adelaide could be a good close series. I don't have the same hope for Canberra-Perth.

Hey Luuuc, Rebecca Cole had a breakout season this year. I haven't really seen her play -- or at least she never made an impression on me. Do you see any WNBA potential there? She's 5-10 like Whitcomb, and at 26 is around the same age as Sami when she started to play well.

Sami was somewhat of a late bloomer, whereas Cole was good from a young age and was on my Opals radar several years ago, but just had a terrible run with injuries over a lot of years. Really pleased for her to finally be healthy this season and playing as well as she is. She was worked her butt off to get where she is.
But no, I don't see her in the WNBA. I think she has put herself into the mix for an Opals spot (though she is really into 3x3 and I think she might be aiming for that for Tokyo 2020, which would take her out of Opals contention).
She has a pretty solid all-around game, but I just don't see the "x-factor" in her game that would grab the attention of a WNBA scout.

There are very few complete players out there. Most have obvious strengths and weaknesses. If Cole has a solid all-around game, that would be x-factor enough. However, if she's more interested in opportunities with the national team, whether Opals or 3x3, then she may not have any interest or time for the WNBA. Thanks.

In the Brondello era I don't think Opals aspirants are as much of an availability problem for WNBA teams as they have been under Joyce or Graf in the past. (eg. the Opals camp later in the year is being held in Phoenix) I just think that most WNBA coaches would rather grab someone they are familiar with from college as their end-of-the-roster guard rather than someone they only have some WNBL footage of. (Brondello herself could be an exception, given that she brought Tess Madgen to Phoenix a few years ago).

Also, random stat time:
Ezi Magbegor: 8.1 ppg (49%), 4.7 rpg
Zitina Aokuso: 8.0 ppg (44%), 5.1 rpg
I'll be interested to see what has happened to those numbers by season's end. |
Final stats:
Ezi Magbegor: 8.8 points (0.55 FG%, 0.55 FT%), 4.5 reb, 0.7 ast, 0.9 blk, 1.2 to.
Zitina Aokuso: 9.5 points (0.46 FG%, 0.62 FT%), 5.6 reb, 1.1 ast, 0.5 blk, 2.3 to.
Lame WNBL website doesn't provide minutes unfortunately. Aokuso's would have been higher but I don't know how much.

Best-of-3 semi finals are underway. Format has been changed this season to H-A-H.
We've got (1) Canberra vs (4) Perth, and (2) Melbourne vs (3) Adelaide.
Semi Final Game 1
Canberra 95 (Nurse 31p 3a 3s, Mitchell 24p 6r 7a, Griffin 18p 12r 7a, Wilson 9p 7a, Tolo 8p 7r)
Perth 76 (McPhee 25p 8r, Schwagmeyer 13p 7r, Steindl 10p, Taylor 9p 5r)

Semi Final Game Twos:
Adelaide 100 (Coffey 30p 9r, Nicholson 23p 6r, Alexander 20p 9r, Blicavs 11p, Seekamp 9p 12a)
Melbourne 92 (Allen 29p 6a, George 24p 9r, O'Hea 13p 4a, Talbot 8p 8r, Garrick 8p, Purcell 8p)
Boxscore

Perth 75 (Ebzery 17p 5r 4a, Schwagmeyer 17p 5r, Mansfield 12p, Taylor 11p 7r, McPhee 10p 19r, Allen 4p 4a 4b)
Canberra 91 (Nurse 27p, Mitchell 19p 5r 7a, Wilson 15p 6r 12a, Griffin 12p 13r 3s, Tolo 8p, Froling 8p)

So both semi final series end in 2-0 sweeps, and it will be Canberra vs Adelaide in the grand finals.
