Baylor can't get the win at Palo Alto so we are left with 17 unbeatens.

I’m not sure of the purpose of the gaps other than your personal rating system. If you thought BC might take down Minnesota, that could explain a few things. What was that mid-major that took California to OT? That doesn’t seem to be reflected anywhere here.

If there needs to be any gaps at all, I think a better placement would be like this.

Elite P5
Connecticut (9-0) January 3 @Baylor
Mississippi St (9-0) - @Oregon
Louisville (9-0) - Today - Kentucky
Maryland (9-0) - December 20 - @Delaware

Middlin’ P5
North Carolina St (10-0) - December 15 - Maine
Tennessee (7-0) - Today - @Texas
California (8-0) - December 22 - Connecticut
Indiana (8-0) - December 21 - South Dakota
Minnesota (8-0) - Today - @Boston College
USC (8-0) - December 19 - @Texas A&M
Virginia Tech (9-0) - December 21 - Ohio St
Utah (9-0) - December 20 - Florida

Mid-major
Ohio (8-0) - December 16 - @IUPUI
Northeastern (8-0) - December 18 - @Marist
Portland St (5-0) - December 18 - UC Irvine
South Alabama (7-0) - December 20 - New Mexico St
Bradley (7-0) - December 20 - @Purdue

The gaps are due to the way the teams were originally listed, nothing more. When a team loses I take them out and move them to the list of teams that lost since the start. Originally the teams were listed according to their overall ranking.

And oh yeah, it was St Mary's that took Cal to overtime. St Mary's only losses this season have been to ranked teams, Oregon, Oregon St and Cal. Sr. Sydney Raggio is a very good player who will make it to a WNBA camp and could even be a 3rd round draft pick depending on how she does the rest of the season.

4 previously unbeaten teams lost last night.

Tennessee 85-95 Stanford
Northeastern 84-90 Marist
Portland St 68-73 UC Irvine
Mississippi St 74-82 Oregon

That leaves a lucky 13 unbeatens.

It's still early (2nd quarter) but undefeated Bradley is losing to 2-7 Cleveland State. I think Bradley will get it together, but a game worth paying attention to.

[edit] Bradley escapes with 2 point win.

USC losing at A&M. They look like the same ol', same ol' kinda dumb stuff team that we (on the left coast) already know. It also helped that the refs called fouls on USC as soon as a whiff of air touched Carter. And 5-26 from three was not exactly stellar either.

Connecticut survives, but was losing at the final media timeout (about 4 minutes to go).

The real shocker could be Indiana losing to Grambling.

Wow. I was starting to wonder how good Indiana was without Tyra and Amanda.

Last year I predicted that Va Tech would start to do a lot better. It was partly based on how they were playing at the end of the season with their new coach and partly due to landing the 3rd Mabrey, who seems to be doing very well there so far this year as a freshman.

Granted their toughest opponent to date was Villanova, but I still think they'll make some noise in the ACC and make the NCAAs this year.

After their shocking loss to Grambling, Indiana bounced back with an impressive win over South Dakota.

Exotic neutral sites can be the great equalizer.

Indiana and Bradley need to come off the list, which leaves 10 unbeatens.

Not a good day for the undefeated.

Michigan knocks Minnesota out of the ranks - not even an upset, but still.

However, Rutgers takes down the Terrapin, despite being 15 point underdogs.

I’m not sure why you’d think it wasn’t an upset. Michigan hasn’t been ranked, and Minnesota was #12.

Because Michigan was 1.5 point favorites going into the game....

I agree that this wasn't an upset. The top half of the Big 10 is quite balanced, so the home court advantage becomes even bigger. Michigan over Minnesota, just like Michigan St over Iowa a few days ago, was just the home team defending their court against a comparable team.

Maryland seemed to be a notch above the rest of the league but they had a very weak non-conference schedule. The loss to Rutgers following a game with Penn St that was basically even through 3 quarters requires a downward reevaluation of the Terrapins. The 4 "M's" plus Iowa are all close, and Indiana, Rutgers, Northwestern and Purdue aren't far behind. Even Nebraska and Wisconsin are competitive. Only Penn St, Illinois and Ohio St seem a step below.

I updated the original post to include the next difficult game for each of the 7 remaining unbeatens. North Carolina St has an easy January schedule but has 5 tough games over a 6 game stretch in February.

The B1G will be lucky to get a 2-seed after Maryland’s loss tonight. J wouldn’t be surprised to see them only get 4 teams in the tournament.
