It seems that no other league has supplied as many players to the WNBA than the WNBL (I know of no way to check this though. Cambage, O'hea, Whitcomb, Talbot come to mind) Also the WNBA supplies a lot of players to the WNBL as well. WNBA players like Sancho Lyttle seemed to be much brighter stars in the Euro zone leagues as well. Even Roshonda Gray and Ciera Burdick put up some pretty big numbers in Italy as I recall. So it seems like the WNBL may be one of the strongest leagues around.

The WNBL compares pretty well with the European domestic leagues, but the Euroleague is still where it's at for most of the best WNBA players (plus the best European players who could be WNBA players but choose not to be). There's still not that much money in the WNBL.

Also:

* Barbara Turner joins the Bendigo Spirit, replacing the injured Jamie Scott

* Here's the Perth Lynx vs Adelaide Lightning game from Round 1. (YouTube link)

Round 2

A couple of injured Opals point guards returned to action today, with Leilani Mitchell and Lauren Mansfield both coming off their respective benches.
Canberra continued their winning start, and so did surprise packets Bendigo. 32 from Brittany McPhee and 4 triples from Asia Taylor helped Perth get their first win.
On the negative side of things, Snell copped an injury that probably cost her team its first win, and Jarry had a fall in her game and missed the rest of the weekend - hopefully just as a precaution.

---
The televised game was Melbourne getting their first win of the season over an injury-depleted Sydney Uni, which I will link in a couple of days. Good chance to see Magbegor, Bunton, and Tupaea in action. Or watch Lindsay Allen score 23, O'Hea finding her range from the perimeter, or Cayla George getting a near-triple-double (including 4/17 shooting)

There were also a few live streamed games this round (2 of which suffered catastrophic technical failures). They are streamed at http://www.foxsports.com.au/live and are not geo-blocked this season, which would be cool for international fans, other than the fact that they're not available to view once the game is finished. You can only see them live, which seems like quite a waste. And a pain for USA viewers in particular due to the time difference.

Did they give assist credit on airballs?

I thought the WNBA and WCBB had become a slaves to mammon with all the commercial signs in the gyms and the logos on uniforms.

But the WNBL has giant signs in that gym advertising personal injury LAWYERS!!! Ewww! "No win, no fees" -- it says. Well, looking on the positive side, perhaps basketball teams should adopt that policy.

Round 3

Melbourne shifted into high gear and became the first team to beat Canberra, despite Kia Nurse's best efforts, Bendigo's winning streak also came to screeching halt on the Perth-Adelaide road double, Townsville barely avoided being trap game victims against Sydney, who were without 3 injured starters (Bunton, Snell & Tupaea) in the TV game, and after barely hanging on to beat the Spirit after leading 61-34 at half time, Perth today crushed the Rangers to join Canberra at the top of the standings, while Adelaide gave Bendigo a serious beatdown too, including a 20/20 from Nia Coffey. Kayla Alexander saw her first WNBL action in this game too.

* Not sure if I've mentioned it before but Gonzaga alum, Kayla Standish, got married over the off-season and is now Kayla Steindl.

Round 4

6 games spanned 5 days this round.
Melbourne were without Ezi Magbegor (broken bone in her hand) but still easily beat Dandenong, but then they lost Garrick as well and couldn't get past Bendigo today.
Another good week for Perth - beating a depleted Sydney team, and then getting an overtime win in Townsville.
Canberra continued their winning form, and also celebrated Kia Nurse winning Player of the Month, and Paul Goriss winning Coach of the Month.
Next weekend's TV game could be a good one: Canberra @ Perth

Not a UK-friendly time unfortunately.
Saturday at 12:00 Perth time = 04:00 UTC = Friday 23:00 US ET Live Streaming Site Link
Not too bad for any west coast McPhee fans, or Kia Nurse fans who are up late though.

It looks like SBS are now archiving the TV games for the whole season at http://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/search/wnbl but I'm pretty sure that whole site is geoblocked.

That's now-ish, right? Because all I see is a countdown to tomorrow's Bendigo-Sydney game.

Oh damn. Sad It was indeed then-ish, but not live streamed, and that's my bad for screwing that up because the TV game is not streamed on that website, only other random games (like tomorrow's) are shown there.
Sorry about that … don't know what I was thinking posting that link for that game.

Round 5

A good weekend for Melbourne with 2 wins, and in particular for Lindsay Allen, who is scoring well in addition to distributing and is a good shot at POTW this week.
Kelsey Griffin's huge game of 30 & 18 would have put her in contention, but not enough help saw her team go down in Perth.
Sydney & Dandenong continued their losing form, and perennial playoff participants Townsville are struggling too right now. Batkovic with a very rare quiet game.

So how long is Magbegor expected to be out? A broken bone in her hand sounds serious.

It might help. Then she remains the athletic youngster with lots of potential, rather than the girl averaging 4 points and 5 rebounds in a league where an 85-year old Suzy Batkovic is still an MVP candidate.

Round 6

Boomers continue to power ahead despite being without both Magbegor and Talbot this weekend. They easily broke Perth's winning streak, and then went home and defeated Townsville in the televised game.
Dandenong got a much-needed win, while Sydney's rotten luck continued - getting Tupaea back from concussion but losing centre Alex Bunton.
Lindsay Allen, Kelsey Griffin, Kayla Alexander, Suzy Batkovic & Cayla George will all be in the Team of the Week conversation at WNBL HQ.

I know you've answered this kind of question before, but I'm old and forget things ...

So what kind of financial situation is a player like Brittany McPhee in? Does she get free housing and a small salary? Does she have a car to drive around in? What kind of salary does she get, and is the tax rate similar to here?

The reason I pick McPhee is she's not a star, really, but obviously is a very good player in the league. I would assume the best players do better, but I wonder how the financials compare with Europe for a player like McPhee.

I'd be interested to know that as well!
Not much gets said about the salaries down here.
The team would provide basic housing in a good neighbourhood (convenient to the stadium the city and the beach) and a car, but I don't know if they'd be shared with a roomie.
Salary I have no idea, especially for someone like Brittany who isn't yet proven in this league - as opposed to say Asia Taylor, who has played 2 seasons here and made the All Star 5 both times. I was going to throw a few numbers at you as barely-educated guesses but I'm reluctant to even do that. I'll see what I can find out first.
The tax rate here atm is:
Quote:
19 cents for each $1 over $18,200
For income = $37,001-$90,000 : $3,572 plus 32.5 cents for each dollar over $37,000
