Only if those people don't understand the concept of salary cap circumvention and how much the NBA/WNBA frown upon it. |

I talked to someone who's worked in the NBA for 15 years or more, and sadly, he believes most of these female hires are window-dressing. That said, of course, you can't prove yourself unless you get a chance and some of these PR-motivated moves will give women a chance to show what they can do.
One big negative, however, is the significant portion of misogynistic NBA players who have little or no respect for women. That will make it very hard for a woman to really be an effective coach.

Hmmm.... can you really consider female hires as “window dressing” or “PR-motivated” and still not consider yourself misogynistic?

Or, from the positive angle, maybe they'll start to have more respect for women in general once they see that one can be an effective basketball coach who helps improve their game/team. |

In terms of any form of bias, including sexism and misogyny, I believe that some people will stick to it no matter what. But some people--when actually confronted with a specific individual who is terrific--will rethink their prejudices. There are many examples of people who HAVE changed and grown, though of course not everyone can or will.

Could the other teams complain about the Wizards hiring Toliver? |

I doubt anyone would bother until and unless she re-signs with the Mystics for a single cent below the max (if she signed for the vet minimum all hell would break loose). Which I suppose you could extend to say that if Seattle continued to pay Bird the max as a player, why couldn't they also pay her as a coach on top? I'm pretty certain the NBA has a by-law that outlaws player-coaches these days, but I don't know for sure if the WNBA has it as well. |

I think she was hired purely so Scottie Brooks could have someone on his staff shorter than him.

not to mention the fact that players are union & management isn't. the two will never be entwined.

I see the tendency towards hiring WNBA players for NBA assistant coaching positions as being both PR and being able to get good basketball minds on the cheap. Comparable men's players are in a different stratosphere as far as salaries are concerned. The key is the buy in of the coaching staff as much as the players. Becky Hammon was successful because Popovich was strongly supportive.
It seems like this is a win-win for both the NBA and WNBA.
