Was watching some basketball content on YouTube and these appeared in my "up next" panel:

Nice article by Steph.

Really hoping the NBA players voices continue in support of the players during collective bargaining. It can only help.

Who cares what some stupid white bitch has to say?

Does she have any skin in the game, NO!

Is she going to donate her salary to the WNBA Players Union, NO!

For some odd reason in the USA, woman do not support other woman

in team sports unless it is soccer, and even that support has its limits.

My tolerance of your attitude has its limits too, and you just reached it.

If you paid WNBA players equal for the amount of work it would be around 10,000,000 per season.

But sports is like the entertainment industry (or a subset of it). People are paid more by popularity and talent than by the amount of work they do. Actors in shows off Broadway make less - for the same work - than people on Broadway. Someone in a TVLand sitcom makes less - for the same work - than someone in an ABC sitcom.

What a stupid and counter-productive thing to put out, on a protected twitter account, during the biggest TV event in years. And god knows what they're throwing in to get the average up to 116k. Per diems, housing, vehicle, insurance premiums, gas money for the bus, team issued sports bras...

Trying to figure out what the whole point is unless they have some kind of misogynist running their account.

I guess they want to use this in upcoming negotiations against the players ?> Not sure if this is a "War" move or what but this is still absolutely ridiculous. 106,00 average but max salary's range around 119,00. GTFOH lol

Hence why the tweet referenced "compensation" and not salary...

You're probably on the right track. I don't know who that comment was meant for behind a protected account, but in the corporate world discussion about compensation includes not only salary but all remuneration and benefits. Health insurance is the obvious one for most people. Large companies usually have a 401k matching program. There's usually a bit of life insurance, and some companies provide free lunch. Executives get stock options, and a lot of financial companies give bonuses to a wide range of employees. A few old-style companies still have defined pensions. So, I'm sure that higher compensation number for players includes medical insurance, housing, the team-provided rental car, maybe free meals at the training facility, and sundry other things. It's fair to count these items because it's a cost to the team and the players would otherwise have to pay for them. However, it is deceptive to present these figures as if they are comparable to pure salary. The context has to be made clear.

I appreciate that's how they're getting there, but it's not like anyone ever includes that stuff when they talk about how much players make. It's an intentionally provocative and argumentative way to add things up, and exactly what stuff you include seems pretty arbitrary.

I completely agree. "Total compensation" is something used when an employer knows the salary is at such a (low) number that it will raise eyebrows.

One thing I hear a lot in talking to basketball fans and high school-age players and families is that "You barely make any money in the WNBA so don't even consider taking basketball seriously."

From that perspective, this kind of communication makes some sense, as it upgrades the image of the league, and women's basketball, in the eyes of people who really don't know anything about it.

I absolutely wouldn't have a problem with them making the point that total income is actually much higher than the base reported salaries. But do it by giving those numbers to Doug Feinberg or Mechelle Voepel to write a piece on it, or via some kind of in-depth feature on your (awful) website about all the other things that are provided to your players. Don't respond to a little-read article with a terse tweet, from a protected account, in a year with CBA negotiations coming up, with numbers that just make you sound belligerent and obnoxious.

That would create issues, given that some of the stuff teams are required to provide presumably costs more in, say, LA or New York than it does in Indiana or Uncasville.

I don't have a problem with the league talking about compensation but they should be upfront about salaries first and then discuss compensation with an explanation that lists the benefits. Something like, "The average is $$$. In addition to the salary, players are compensated with A,B, & C which averages $$$." When they come out the way they did, it does seem like a defensive move.

Can anyone give any details on the three key issues the players would like to achieve with a new collective bargaining agreement?

so...do they think they will be making $100,000 (or even $50k if you want to go salary only) for five months work when they first get out of college?
