It was Stanley's first tournament as USA Head Coach?

If you could assign her, and by extension her staff, a letter grade based on a traditional scale of ranking, how would you rate her first effort?

I feel like a better question would be, how far down the ranks would you have to go before you found a coach who couldn't do what Staley just did?

These things are always a pass-fail situation. She gets a P.

The last time the USA Women’s Basketball National Team failed to win Gold at FIBA was in 2006, when Anne Donovan was the Head Coach. They won Bronze.

They won the gold medal, so gotta give her a passing grade. In the future they might want to keep Miller off the selection committee, and definitely never let Reeve on the selection committee.

I don't know, was she actually coaching? Laughing Laughing I would give Dan Hughes a shot any day after what he did with the Storm.

Storm fans claim he was not coaching either, leaving it up to Bird and Klop.......Apparently Hughes contribution was to let them run the show, while Boucek thought she was in charge....

IDK he seemed to change up the rotation over the previous year OR was that Bird/Klop Laughing Agler could definitely take some lessons from him.

since the question was what grade would we give Dawn as coach I give her a Pass because they won Gold. Nothing else to say.

not that impressed. They won, so I guess that was all that was needed. Talent wise, there was no reason they should have actually looked like they were struggling some of the time and losing some quarters even with their 'starters' on the floor. They looked vulnerable if some of the other teams had had any depth at all. The last game looked particularly discombobulated. Yeah, I know they didn't have a lot of time together, etc... Still to me they shouldn't have won any games by less than 30, and that should have been with the 'scrubs' playing half the time.

Doesn’t matter who coaches USA. With the players they have year in and year out, they always win. She’s no better or no worse than the parade of coaches that came before her and that’ll come after her. Honestly, Team USA would still win with no coaching staff whatsoever.

Why does the USA have "the players they have year in and year out,"?

Their is a reason.

One of the principal advantageous that Team USA has is SUPERIOR

coaching. And like him or not, and I do not trust him. Geno Auriemma

is an American class coach. Sandy Brondello is a good coach, but she

could not carry his shoelaces. There is a reason Geno's 2013–2018

salary contract is $10.9 million and Sandy does not earn anywhere

near that.

And just like in any other sport, superior coaching = superior player

development in the right environment. But it is rather PATHETIC

that a country has to send their kids to AMERICAN high-schools/prep

schools/colleges for player development. It is also more than PATHET-

IC that these self-styled so-called "basketball" nations national teams

use naturalized players because they do not have their own homegrown

talent that they cannot even develop themselves.

Sandy Brondello did a good to very good job for the Opals. She can only

run with the horses they gave her. The Opals have but ONE player that

might become good to very good, Ezi MAGBEGOR.

When compared to what the best American Basketball coaches earn,

Australian coaches are low paid rent boys.

The NBA is a Fortune 500 Company, the NBL is a streetside fruit car

business.

Then what happened in 2006?

FLUKE

As opposed to:

When you win the Gold Medal 10 times out of 18 times the event is

held, that's not a FLUKE nor is it LUCK.

I was just responding to the hyperbole that the U.S. could win without a coach or much of anything but players. In 2006, they had a coach, and all that support, and still didn't win.

The overall record, as I mentioned in this or another thread, is remarkable, and really unmatched in international athletic competition.

If I remember correctly, the 2006 USA team had Anne Donovan coaching and she made some substitution decisions during the medal round that backfired. Also, Lisa Leslie didn't play in that tournament, as she was on maternity leave.

If Team USA had the same PREPARATION time as say Belgium, they've

won their games by 30 points or more. If Australia, Belgium, or Spain had

the same or LESS PREPARATION time as Team USA, would they have still

finished 2nd, 4th, & 3rd? Did Dawn Staley ask for Team USA's limited

preparation? Criticize Dawn Staley for her mistakes, not for the things she

did not or could not control.
