Sad but not unexpected ...

A dismal football game between two schools few follow with any intensity outdrew a WNBA semifinal -- not by much, granted, but still ...

Women don't watch games at the same level men do, for whatever reason. And the hope was back in the day that women would watch more games if women were playing. Hasn't happened yet ...

Mystics-Dream averaged 430,000 viewers and Mercury-Storm averaged 256,000 viewers on ESPNEWS. The USWNT friendly that prevented the second game from airing on ESPN2 averaged 259,000 viewers. Over on ESPN, US Open coverage averaged 1,680,000 viewers.

It might've come down to rights deals and contracts more than straight choice, but those numbers suggest ESPN screwed that one up. Even shunted onto a sideline channel that fewer people get, the WNBA game basically equalled the soccer game - indicating more people probably wanted to watch the basketball. Really a shame that such a compelling game, concluding a series that had actually built some momentum on TV and social media, finished off on a bonus channel.

And now we have ESPN basically admitting that ESPNews isn't good enough or accessible enough by letting Game 1 of the Finals be shown on local TV in the Seattle and DC markets.

If ESPN wants to jerk around the WNBA as to coverage, it is the network's right. They pay (donate?!) big money to each WNBA franchise. Without the big ESPN money, it is likely one or more of the current franchises would have gone away by now.

The big question is will ESPN renew the current contract at the same generous price when the contract is up in a few years. With more and more pick-your-channels options, ESPN has been losing large numbers of previously captive subscribers. To be blunt, ESPN could get the rights to these games for far less than they currently pay assuming the league as we know it was still here.

But how many of those remaining subscribers are there because of their NBA games? And how much does that 'generous price' for WNBA rights do to stay on the good side of the NBA? Compared to what they actually shell out for NBA rights, it's a very small price to pay if it helps keep those rights in their hands.

It would be fascinating to know what the WNBA rights would actually be worth in an open negotiation with multiple potential partners (ESPN, FoxSports, NBCSports, whoever wants in), compared to whatever they're actually getting now. But the league may well be better off never finding out.

The unfairly maligned football game averaged 362,000 viewers. The portion of Dream-Mystics that actually made in on the air averaged 339,000 viewers.

Storm-Mercury put up very nice numbers across the board with an average of 460,000 viewers and a healthy number of younger viewers.

It was highly rated enough that we have readily available demographic data expressed in percentages. I thought it would be interesting to compare it to the least watched episode of Basketball Wives ever since it aired later Sunday night and also involves women related to basketball in some way.

The game's number is listed first:
18-49: .17 vs .40
F18-49: .09 vs .64
M18-49: .25 vs .16
18-34: .18 vs .37
F12-34: .07 vs .45
M12-34: .23 vs .15
25-54: .43 vs .14
50+: .26 vs .19

On ESPN, hours of US Open coverage averaged 1,526,000 viewers. Notre Dame-Purdue volleyball on ESPNU at 2pm averaged 158,000 viewers.

Hard to see how these coexist:
18-34: .18 vs .37
18-49: .17 vs .40
25-54: .43 vs .14
50+: .26 vs .19

It’s makes it look like Basketball Wives wins every age group but 50-54, where it gets killed.

That's cuz I flipped the last two for some reason. It should be .43 and .26 for Basketball Wives and .14 and .19 for the game.

Isn't it about time that Basketball Wives included the wife of a WNBA player?

Game 1 averaged 226,000 viewers on ESPNEWS only. The ESPN simulcast of the second half averaged 290,000 viewers.

The six hours of US Open coverage on ESPN averaged 1,222,000 viewers. Two hours of rain delay college football coverage averaged 550,000 viewers on ESPN2 before the game averaged 1,076,000 viewers.

The advantage of a traditional network ...

And if you didn't want to watch football, a clear alternative.

Yup.

If the NFL hadn't begun, would ABC have aired it? If not, the irony is sweet.

The top five markets were: Seattle-Tacoma (3.6), Hartford & New Haven (1.7), Washington, DC (1.2), New Orleans (0.9), Memphis (0.9).

I get Seattle-Tacoma and DC. I guess Harford/New Haven may be UCONN fans. But what is the draw for New Orleans and Memphis?

I don't know about New Orleans, but Memphis and Nashville often show up in these lists. Along with the obvious college connections, it's one of the reasons people sometimes suggest a team should be started in Tennessee.

519,000 viewers on average.

Baseball on ESPN at around the same time averaged 899,000 viewers.

There was an article some years back that described ESPN WNBA viewers. Black males above a certain age was, I think, the top demographic. At a minimum they did very well in that category. Memphis is 62.6% black. New Orleans is 60.2% black.

The celebrity game averaged 1,307,000 viewers. That was substantially more than any WNBA game last season so there should be no expectation that WNBA participation will not continue there. Congratulations to the Rising Stars game for finally beating the celebrity game.
