After the All Star break NBATV is playing at least one game every day for 13 straight days, until August 13th. Even the rare Monday game on August 6th, an early morning Storm-Liberty matchup.

Set your DVRs...

“I read that when Nielson sets a household up for monitoring for ratings purposes, they make it so that falling asleep on the couch or leaving the room won't create false ratings. Each member of the household gets a remote control that they have to point at the Nielson box and click every so often to show that they are present and awake“

This is not true. We were a Nielsen family last month, and did not have to do that at all. We could literally leave our TVs on a station all day, go about cleaning house, running errands, etc. and whatever stations were on there would get our ratings.

That's not how it worked for this guy and his wife back in 2006. The Wikipedia entry for Nielson ratings mentions that they started out requiring viewers to keep diaries, and then went to Set Meters with things like people meters for information on the person watching. You will normally see articles report a show's ratings for overall viewership, and also break out ages 18-49, as they do here. And advertisers also want to know the sex of the viewers, to say nothing of whether or not someone is in the room and awake. So I don't know what to make of your experience.

I was wondering if by now the tech exists so that the service providers, or networks know who and how many people are watching a specific program at a given time. It seems like that could be done easily. After all, every time I come to RebKell I am listed as browsing this forum along with all the other people doing so at the time.

No ratings for Sunday's game since I guess it was below the top 150 of cable events on that day.

The Junior NBA Girls' Championship averaged 361,000 viewers on FOX though. On Saturday, the International Championship averaged 304,000 viewers and then the US Championship averaged 300,000 viewers.

No ratings for Sunday's game either.

By request, tennis on ESPN2 averaged 220,000 viewers on Friday. That was over five hours of coverage and included periods with no action. On ESPN, the thrilling Little League game averaged 1,191,000 viewers at that time while BIG3 basketball averaged 760,000 viewers on FOX.

Decent numbers despite their times.

Mercury-Storm Game 1 averaged 322,000 viewers. I have not seen anything on the other game.

Little League Baseball on ABC at around the same time averaged 3,248,000 viewers. The final broadcast of BIG3 on FOX on Friday averaged 1,004,000 viewers.

Mystics-Dream averaged 359,000 viewers and Mercury-Storm averaged 340,000 viewers.

Over on ESPN, five hours of tennis coverage averaged 816,000 viewers.

Love to know the rating for the football game that preceded Atlanta-Washington ...

Obviously ESPN knew it would run over, so their judgment must have been that the football game would attract more viewers. And then it seemed like there were filler ads in the WNBA game (LaserX, etc.), but I don't know if that was the case during the football game.

ESPN can afford to screw over the W because they know there won't be any repercussions. The NBA won't let the W go anywhere else.

That's too bad. The WNBA deserve better exposure from their media partner than what ESPN has done over the many years they have been broadcasting games. When the ESPN contract runs out the WNBA should seek a better deal with another broadcast media company.

The NBA won't let them. As long as the W is under the NBA umbrella, it will continue to get screwed over by ESPN.

This is why I keep pushing for a second TV partner that can air games on either Fridays or Sundays.

It could be that networks think they will get more people upset if they don’t show the end of a game rather than not showing the beginning of a game.

I know that we have had more games since then, but back to Friday:

Storm-Mercury averaged 148,000 viewers (should be the ESPNEWS broadcast only). No broadcast of Dream-Mystics was in the Top 150 of cable programs so I have not seen any numbers for it.

On ESPN during those times, US Open Tennis averaged 1,951,000 viewers and Western Kentucky-Wisconsin football averaged 1,409,000 viewers.

On ESPN2, a college football studio show averaged 270,000 viewers, the start of the football game while tennis ran over on the main channel averaged 688,000 viewers, more tennis averaged 705,000 viewers, and then the part of the USWNT exhibition that was not cut off averaged 236,000 viewers.

ESPNU is in about the same number of homes as ESPNEWS. Army-Duke football averaged 503,000 viewers and then a high school football game averaged 125,000 viewers.

The unfairly maligned football game averaged 362,000 viewers. The portion of Dream-Mystics that actually made in on the air averaged 339,000 viewers.

Storm-Mercury put up very nice numbers across the board with an average of 460,000 viewers and a healthy number of younger viewers.

It was highly rated enough that we have readily available demographic data expressed in percentages. I thought it would be interesting to compare it to the least watched episode of Basketball Wives ever since it aired later Sunday night and also involves women related to basketball in some way.

The game's number is listed first (fixed thanks to tfan):
18-49: .17 vs .40
F18-49: .09 vs .64
M18-49: .25 vs .16
18-34: .18 vs .37
F12-34: .07 vs .45
M12-34: .23 vs .15
25-54: .14 vs .43
50+: .19 vs .26

On ESPN, hours of US Open coverage averaged 1,526,000 viewers. Notre Dame-Purdue volleyball on ESPNU at 2pm averaged 158,000 viewers.

Hard to see how these coexist:
18-34: .18 vs .37
18-49: .17 vs .40
25-54: .43 vs .14
50+: .26 vs .19

It’s makes it look like Basketball Wives wins every age group but 50-54, where it gets killed.

That's cuz I flipped the last two for some reason. It should be .43 and .26 for Basketball Wives and .14 and .19 for the game.
