Skylar Diggins-Smith Wants to Be Paid Like a Man and Isn't Afraid to Say It

I was a guest on the His & Hers that featured Jemele Hill and Michael Smith and is no longer on ESPN. I was filling in for Jemele during game five of the WNBA Finals — Minnesota versus L.A. That’s the longest the series could go. And they have a board where they write down what's gonna happen on the show. And game five of the WNBA finals was not even on the board.

They asked me, “Well, is there anything that you wanna talk about?” And I kinda scoffed and said, “Uh, game five of the WNBA Finals?” So they just scribbled it into one of the blocks. It was so symbolic, that moment. It’s kinda unbelievable how the WNBA is viewed and treated even by the “Worldwide Leader in Sports.”

Elizabeth Williams was on the Burn it All Down podcast this week and said she expects the players to opt out of the CBA. She did not discount the possibility of a work stoppage in 2020.

If might be best that there is no season in 2020. We might be too busy fighting World War Three to be bothered watching pro sports.

But historically haven't women's sports done quite well during war-time, providing distraction and entertainment while all the men are off shooting each other?

Then we wont have a season ever again. By 2020 interest should really start to peak losing that momentum could be disastrous for our league.

Of course some knuckledragers went all in on her because of her comments. 21 pages and counting. I noticed that some of the people are most vocal about the reason why WNBA players shouldn't be paid more are the people that don't watch it.

Agreed that any type of work stoppages or a shorten season could kill the league. No 2020 season would nearly guarantee the death of the league. The league, though 22 years old, is still struggling to find more fans and, most importantly, more $$$.

Nice article by Steph.

Really hoping the NBA players voices continue in support of the players during collective bargaining. It can only help.

WNBA player may have to be careful what they ask for. Getting paid like men could mean stars get 30x what the vet min is. Not sure they want that much disparity.

Id have to imagine getting paid what the men do would require a much longer season as well . Not giving up big lump sums for 34 game seasons. Possibly increase to 52 ? With the moving the beginning of the season to the winter ?

Always felt with a possible 44 game season (play everyone 4 times), and having the first round be a best-of-3(1 vs. 8), the season could be 6 months long. Can't go past October due to NHL/NBA arena conflicts. This could increase pay by 50%.

The WNBA already jumps through hoops trying to avoid conflicts with overseas ball. There’s not going to be more games in the WNBA season until there’s a lot bigger demand for WNBA.

If they paid more there would be no need to go overseas any longer . So just using that as a method to schedule around shows they could care less about salaries and would prefer to keep low balling .

All of this assumes teams are actually making anything much by hosting games. With the number of tickets given away, arena rental, staffing etc., gate receipts may not actually be that big of a revenue stream. If they're making more from sponsorships and the TV deal, those are things that won't necessarily rise just because you play more games (especially when you consider that ESPN already only seems to grudgingly put games on their schedule). I'll be surprised if the changes end up being as drastic as some of you are suggesting.

Trying to extend the season probably creates more problems than it fixes, because it's still unlikely to increase salaries to the extent that most players would eschew overseas play. So then you just end up with more timing conflicts between the leagues, more players missing games somewhere, potentially even less rest, more arena/TV conflicts with other sports, and so on. I'm not sure this stuff is really workable yet.

A longer season will follow the money, not lead it

And if you increase them too much then more owners decide the league isn't worth the effort/losses, more teams go under, you end up with something like an 8-team league, and 33% of the player-base is earning $0 for playing in the US.

BTW - it seems pretty clear that next season should not be at risk for work stoppage - rather it would be the 2020 season. Here is what the CBA says:
Quote:

ARTICLE XXXVIII
TERM OF AGREEMENT
Section 1.
Expiration Date.
This Agreement shall be effective from March 5, 2014 and shall continue in full force and effect through October 31, 2021 or, if later, on the day following the final playoff game of the 2021 Season; provided that the WNBA and the Players Association shall each have the option, exercisable by providing written notice on or before November 1, 2018, to terminate this Agreement effective on October 31, 2019 or, if later, on the day following the final playoff game of the 2019 Season.

In effect they have to give notice by November of this year and then give themselves a year to make a new deal. I don't see why they would not have a 2019 season. 2020 could be at risk if they can't reach an agreement after about a year and a half.

If you paid WNBA players equal for the amount of work it would be around 10,000,000 per season.

Obviously too much.

But I do wonder what the books are. I know the league says only half the teams are profitable, but that’s true of the NBA too.

And I feel that the WNBA does not do a good enough job of selling and valuing its product. (See the ESPN deal.) but the question then becomes what can they do to sell it better and make more revenue.

And of course..at what point does the WNBA pay enough to where players choose to stay here instead of going overseas.

A document has been circulating that is apparently the what the USL has been providing to groups interested in entering teams in their new soccer league that will compete at the third division level:
https://i.imgur.com/OSWJBGO.png

It is interesting to see their projected player expenses as a percentage of total expenses and also to compare those expenses to coaching and front office expenses. They definitely face the same issue as the WNBA in terms of having to compete with other entities for those personnel while having relatively more leverage over the labor market for players.

Adding in the WNBA salary differential - comes out to something like $2-3 M for a WNBA team.

Gee - if I'm an owner I would love to spend a lot money promoting a star player who might not show up, might demand a trade and threaten to sit out, or "rest" for much if not all of a season.......

Can players expect greater revenue sharing in the near future? In a word — no. Borders stated that she and the league welcome informed discussion with players on issues of concern to them. But, ultimately, the revenue does not appear to be high enough to make revenue sharing possible. In her explanation of the situation, Borders identified specific areas of growth that would positively impact the league’s ability for greater revenue sharing:

So unfortunately, running an arena or paying the coaches or paying the referees doesn’t change because it’s the women versus the men. We do not have the revenues today to support greater revenue sharing with our players, but it’s coming. We agree that they should be paid more. We challenge society. We challenge corporations. We challenge our sponsors. We love what we’re doing today, but we need to do more. And so we’ve still got work to do.
