Maybe add this to the NY thread.
Even some unconfirmed rumblings would give me hope.

Just refresh my memory, which of those refs (if any) are from the Delle Donne invisible basket game?

Won
LA (3)
Phoenix (3)
Seattle (2)
Lynx (4)
Never won
Atlanta
Connecticut
Dallas (disregarding "historical franchise")
Washington
After first round, “never won” still at 50% - all former Eastern Conference.

We shall see. But Im not BSing. If you look back, I was the one who met Liz Cambage at Burning Man last year and asked her if she was going to play in the W the next season which she said yes. I can't believe the random encounters I've had with these women. Lol.

this is basketball, it ain't football! |
Because the one game playoff hasn't worked out for college basketball. |
hundred of teams compare to 12 teams. can't you figured that out?
one is a school, the other is pro. surprise you didn't mention peewee basketball that play 24minutes a game running clock. |
College basketball only allows 1 in 6 teams to make the playoffs. The WNBA puts in 2/3 of the teams. Play the full year and have the top 2 play 4 of 7. Baseball has 10 teams of 30 that make the playoffs. Do that and you have 4 teams, with best of 5 for the semis and best of 7 for the final. The NBA and NHL both put approximately half the teams in. Do that and you could have a best of 3 for a first round (teams 3-6).
The playoff schedule is determined by the time they have to get the games in and the number of teams they want to have making the playoffs. It doesn't matter that this is pro vs college or basketball vs tiddlywinks. The playoffs already run 1 month vs 3 months for the regular season. That is enough time to figure out who to crown as champion.

Because the wild card game has not worked out for Major League Baseball. where teams play 162 games to get to the postseason and the wild card matchup is one game. |
baseball is a recreation! you can go thru a double header without breaking a sweat. they play 162 games compare to 34 from the wnba.
nba plays 7 games series in every round of the playoff. |
...which goes against your argument about the WNBA's single elimination format. If MLB plays that many games (162), only to have a single elimination game in the first round of the postseason, why does the WNBA need to have a full-blown "best of" series after 34 games.
nba plays 7 games series in every round of the playoff.[/quote]
30 teams. 16 teams make the playoffs (53.3) percent. And, as an aside, the best-of-7 was only added in the first round in 2004 (going from memory here).
The NBA has charter flights, lots money/revenue, and ratings.
The W does not have charter flights, does not make the same amount of money, and has 66.7 percent of the teams in the playoffs.
Moreover, if you made the first second rounds "best of three," a team in the 5-8 slots could have to play 17 game (maximum) to win the title. That is 50 percent of the entire WNBA season. And this is to say nothing of having the top two teams off during this entire time.
If you eliminate the double-bye, you are then back to considering single-elimination games for the first two rounds or having full-blown series, where a team is traveling (coach) back and forth and playing 50 percent (maximum) of the total number of games in a regular season to earn a WNBA title (again, if among seeds 5-.
Back to your original post, which stated:
The one-game playoff is stupid, mother of all jokes. of course the wnba would never admit that they fucked up.
The reason why the WNBA will never admit this is because the WNBA DID NOT FUCK UP.

I like some parts of this format better than others. The idea of the two best teams meeting in the finals makes perfect sense. Best of 5s in the semis and finals is similarly exciting.
Looking at the one-and-dones, Bill Laimbeer brought to our attention at the time the decision was made that it was done for the purpose of television. And we have indeed seen a handful of highly entertaining one-and-dones. OTOH, if you look at the situation LA found themselves in, they had to fly from LA to CT for a Sunday game. Bus it down to NY to fly back to LA for a Tuesday game. Fly back cross country to DC for a game Thursday with a beat-up team for a game that hardly made for riveting TV. They'd have probably lost anyway but I'd have liked their chances better with two days off before a best-of-3, although with my 1-2 format they'd have had to travel back to LA, it still would have been way less taxing than the way they had to do it under the current format. And if the purpose is for TV, then watching DC wax a travel-fatigued and physically beaten up Sparks team is certainly counter to the intent.
For me, a better approach is to have the top 6 make the playoffs. 6 vs 3 and 5 vs 4 in a best of 3 following a 1-2 format so you don't have multiple cross country trips in one series. The odds of a 7 or 8 seed making the finals let alone winning it is quite low. When Phoenix made the semis as an 8 seed (when they clearly had better personnel) maybe they would have played a little harder and gotten a top 6 instead. You could maintain the semis and finals formats. I think cross country semis are still not ideal (potentially inconvenient start times for fans of a team in a time zone), but I get the premise. You want the best teams having a chance to meet in the finals. That certainly makes perfect sense...and the last two finals have been epic as a result.

The only thing I don’t like about the format is literally the top two seeds getting to relax and rest for a week.

The Dream will not have their megawatt superstar so all that rest and relaxation might be meaningless.

A week is a long time. It might not be all positive.

Going forward and looking at Finals' dates, only the Seattle Storm & Key Arena have a conflict for Game 1 on Sept. 6. Wonder if they'll change the date to the 7th or play the game elsewhere(Alaska Airlines Arena?).

Have to wonder if the Mystics make the Finals if they'd consider playing at the Verizon Center in College Park, MD?
