"Our Heavenly Father has chosen one of our most prolific voices to join His Heavenly Choir...............Aretha now rests in peace!!.....I, like I'm sure she was taught, that we are All put on this earth for a purpose, and once that is fulfilled, we will then be 'Called Home'! She sincerely will be missed throughout the Musical World, Family, and Friends. My deep heartfelt condolence I send from my family to her family and do hope the grief I know they are feeling will begin to subside with time, as losing a family member is a VERY HARD THING to process. Farewell to the one and only Aretha Franklin. Truly the Queen of Soul. What a sad loss. Son of a Preacher Man is ringing in my ears.

It was a double thrill for me to perform on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera on my 85th birthday and have the Queen of Soul (and heart) Aretha Franklin singing with me....she will be missed by the world.

The song was originally written for Franklin, and she released her version in 1970.
It’s included in her “essential” playlist..but that isn’t the song I’d choose to remember Aretha by. (Although, maybe it was played a lot by the person who wrote that tweet.)
Aretha has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. One of the best vocalists ever.
She was always the exception to. Rollingstone and other big music critics have a tendency to exclude minorities and women when it comes to music. Aretha was always given the credit she deserved. (For example, Rolling Stone only listed one woman in the top 15, and less than 20 total, in their list of greatest singers of all time. Aretha was ranked #1. You’re something special when you can crash through glass ceilings.)

Interesting that the song written for the greatest female vocalist wound up being made famous by perhaps the greatest white female vocalist. Both did a wonderful rendition, but I prefer Dusty. On the other hand, there are about 10 other songs (from Mockingbird to This Girl's in Love With You) and I couldn't find another song where I didn't prefer Aretha. So sad to have Aretha pass, and sad to remember that Dusty has been gone for nearly 20 years.

Aretha never thought the song was right for her until she heard her sister sing it.
IMO, Aretha was right the first time. This song isn't quite right for her. I like Erma's version better than Aretha's, and Dusty's better than either of them.

While Aretha was multi-decadal, she will always be remembered by me as one of the superstars of the greatest music (and everything else) decade -- the 60's.
