LOL at the two Dukies comparing the Liberty’s situation to a college team playing at Cameron. |
There's also the fact that the current Duke WOMEN have been experiencing a steadily reducing number of fans in the already small arena due to having an inferior product and unpopular coach. They are CLEARLY talking about the atmosphere of a Duke MEN"S basketball game in Cameron, which is pretty much like going to a rave with contant intense sound and the whole place vibrating. By contrast, at a women's game currently, two people can converse across the stadium when the band's not playing. During Duke Women's Bball golden era, there were scalpers dodging security selling tickets to the big games.
Dear Liberty fans: we Duke fans know what it feels like to lose a once great program and have the talking heads completely fail to acknowledge it. It flat out SUCKS.

Just a thought, but if Dolan's price is too much, could the league fold the team and then revive the Liberty under new ownership? This is assuming there's a group out there wanting the team but don't want to buy it under Dolan's terms. |
If there were multiple groups making offers as has been claimed, I think we would have heard about at least one of them by now. It seems unlikely for MSG to hang onto a business Dolan says has lost money for 22 years, hoping to get more money in a sale. There is only so much money you can get for a business that you have told prospective buyers has never made money in over 2 decades, despite you having advantages (owning arena and TV station) that the buyer will not have.

I completely agree. Let's remember: we don't know for sure that ANYONE out there has expressed serious interest in buying the Liberty.

I'm guessing smaller venues and making it the toughest ticket to get is the way of the future for the WNBA

The venues would have to be highly accessible places though. WCC wasn't selling out every Liberty game if any. When it comes to sports venues it's location, location, location that matters the most.

I do wonder if the Liberty were a good team like in 2016 & 2017 if they would have sold better. I wasn't making the trip up there to see a terrible team. Maybe they would have been forced to increase capacity as they say they're able to(3,000+?).

They were a very good team last season and went on the market before this season started. Seemed like a good time to sell.

Winning teams always draw better, but it's hard to say how much better attendance would have been in WCC.
As for selling the team, there is zero evidence anyone was seriously interested in buying the team, or even taking it over (I have heard $500,000 in fees for the transfer). If Dolan is happy with the team in WCC, that will be the status quo until someone shows up who is willing to lose money in NYC for the privilege of owning the Liberty.

Most of us have experienced computer workarounds at our jobs. A workaround is what you use when you're under the gun and you can't find the time or resources to correct a problem right now. It's a temporary fix that simulates what an actual solution would do, but it comes with other smaller problems that may or may not grow until they are untenable. WCC is a workaround. It lowers expenses to a point where Dolan can live with holding the franchise for now, and it allows the league to maintain a presence in New York. The "small" problem is that you're alienating your fan base. Like all workarounds, it can last for a long time or it can blow-up quickly. We don't know. It sounds like Silver and Borders feel pretty good about this lasting for a while. At the very least, it gives them breathing room so they don't have to make a difficult decision immediately.
