From my personal experience there are three phases of playing good basketball defense.
A) Guarding your assigned player.
B) Team defense/ helping your teammate defend a tough player.
C) Getting defensive rebounds.
Any player voted for the category of the best defensive player of the year should excel in all three phases of playing defense.

All-WNBA Teams
For our All-WNBA Teams, you are tasked to name 5 players to the 1st Team and 5 players to the 2nd Team. For each selection to the 1st Team, the player will receive 10 points. For each selection to the 2nd Team, the player will receive 5 points. Going from the 2016 All-WNBA Teams, they were voted on using the Guard-Guard-Forward-Forward-Center model. So we will be using that model, as well. Players votes will only count for the position they are voted at. Example: Any Maya Moore votes that are marked as a Guard, will be counted for the Guard Position Only. Any Maya Moore votes that are marked as a Forward, will be counted for Forward Position Only.

If the standard operating procedure is to dole out the MVP to a player on the team with the best record then a player on the best defensive team in the league should get the DPOY.
