ORtg
Offensive Rating (available since the 1977-78 season in the NBA); for players it is points produced per 100 posessions, while for teams it is points scored per 100 possessions.

'Offensive and Defensive rating' are a lot more complicated for individuals than teams, though, under their formulas. There's a load more detail about it here: http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/ratings.html

It includes, for the offensive part:
Quote:
The basic building blocks of the Offensive Rating calculation are Individual Total Possessions and Individual Points Produced. The formula for Total Possessions is broken down into four components: Scoring Possessions, Missed FG Possessions, Missed FT Possessions, and Turnovers.

And for the defensive part:
Quote:
The core of the Defensive Rating calculation is the concept of the individual Defensive Stop. Stops take into account the instances of a player ending an opposing possession that are tracked in the boxscore (blocks, steals, and defensive rebounds), in addition to an estimate for the number of forced turnovers and forced misses by the player which aren't captured by steals and blocks.

Glad to see it, but I would not take these numbers to seriously until they scrub the data a little bit. For example - Willingham is averaging 71.5 points/36 and Henry 26.5. No wonder they let Fred go. Why was he letting all world talent like that langquish on the bench? Willingham also has a 100% usage rate. Is that really good or really bad? Then again, her defensive rating was 3 - maybe that's why she only played 71 minutes all year.....

Heh, yeah, they've messed Willingham up. It seems like they've used her production numbers from the whole season, but her minutes totals from the playoffs - which obviously results in some bizarrely inflated advanced stats.

A usage rate of 100% would be a staggeringly greedy player, but also an oddly impressive one. She'd somehow be finishing every single possession when she's on the floor - so her teammates must have an enormous amount of trust in her Wink.

Never, ever trust a statistic that says Carlos Boozer is a better defensive player than Taj Gibson.

The Defensive Rating stat most likely puts more weight in blocks and steals, as opposed to how difficult you make it for the opposition to score.

Oh I'm aware, which I was I winked.

And Boozer is definitely a difference maker on the defensive end. Razz

It appears that NY and Dallas are showing minutes for only one game even though the other figures are for two. Therefore, everyone's PER, per 36 minutes numbers, and anything else calculated off minutes is looking wacky.
