Miela Goodchild is going to Duke, so I am curious to see how Duke's second Australian WBB player performs. Goodchild played for Townsville last year.
As you may recall, the first Australian player who came to Duke (she came from AIS) did very, very well...

Pretty bad news for Luuuc's team... There just aren't Whitcomb-level Australians who are still free agents. It hurts because it seems like the inflow of players who were in Europe is pretty strong this year.
I thought Standish had signed a multiyear deal? Or was that just Steindl? Those import spots are going to have to be put to good use this season. |

The Nia Coffey we're starting to see in Vegas this season could be very successful in the WNBL, along similar lines to Asia Taylor - the 3/4 combo who ends up too strong/too quick rather than too slow/too small when they drop down a level.
Melbourne might have enough scoring threats among their Aussies to make Lindsay Allen a useful pickup. Can be a problem when teams sign imports who aren't natural scorers, expecting them to carry the offense, but she shouldn't have to do that on that team.
Amusing to see Mitchell and Griffin on the same team - when the national team is forced to choose one or the other. |

What are the salaries like in the WNBL? The comfort factor of playing there would attract some players for sure -- and it seems like the rosters are a little deeper/stronger than in the past.
But really, what do I know? (A rhetorical question that does not require an answer so save your bullets ...)

Salaries vary widely from close to nothing up to 5-figures ($AUD) for the very top local players (eg. Lauren Jackson's last contract was $1 mil for 3 seasons, local stars like Taylor & Cambage would be on 100+). But in general, import players aren't choosing Australia for the money, they're choosing it for the lifestyle (English-speaking, summer season, light schedule), and it's a pretty decent standard league compared to the European alternatives. Starting with last season it is also a very compact season (last season was 3 months + 1 month of playoffs), which would be attractive for players wanting to give their bodies some relief.
Last season was probably as talent-laden as we've ever had. This coming season isn't looking quite as strong.

Interesting ... both Nurse and Davis apparently turned down more money to play in Australia, if I understand things correctly. Or maybe the market for those two wasn't that great ...
Nonetheless, should make the WNBL a little better.

Not WNBL, but it can't say much for the standard of basketball in the Adelaide era if 45 year old Jo Hill was the leader in scoring in the Grand Final to get her team the championship. Also, even if she claims she's retiring again, I am not going to believe her. |

Haha, I was going to mention that here as well. No one epitomises "ball is life" better than Jo! She's amazing.

Her sporting career isn't quite over yet though. It turns out that she has been playing aussie rules football as well, and that team made the grand final too! To be played this weekend.

The real news here is that Kaela Davis is still not healthy. |

So are the Opals playing any warmup games before the tourney on Sat? Their roster looks like very few guards and lots of SF, PF, C.

A Liz Cambage-less Opals lost to Spain 65-62 today, you can find it over in the Opals thread. I think they only have a closed door scrimmage with the United States remaining, but I could be wrong.

They've played a bunch of them in various bits of Europe over the last couple of weeks (albeit with Cambage sitting several out). The US thing is the only one left at this point, as far as I know. |

New season tips off 4 days from now.
The regular season schedule is still just 21 games per team, but it has been relaxed a little to span 15 weeks (last season was 13).
The league is also back on free-to-air TV for the first time in a few years, with 9 games to be shown on SBS. 6 others will be on pay TV.
A good summary of the full rosters is here, with "*" denoting the import players, which this season are:
Adelaide: Kayla Alexander, Nia Coffey
Bendigo: Becca Tobin, Jamie Scott
Canberra: Kia Nurse, Kaili McLaren
Dandenong: Betnijah Laney, Kayla Pedersen
Melbourne: Lindsay Allen, Sarah Boothe
Perth: Asia Taylor, Brittany McPhee
Sydney: Amanda Johnson
Townsville: Ally Malott, Laurin Mincy
Star power is down on last season with no Cambage or Courtney Williams.
Ledge power is also down with Sami Whitcomb playing in France.
Kia Nurse looks like the most qualified addition.
The Perth Lynx are looking like following their Minnesota counterparts on a slide down the standings this season We've taken last season's smallball team and somehow managed to subtract a significant amount of height from it.

So I guess Pederson just retired from the WNBA, not basketball entirely?

We`re underway!
Round 1
Just 1 game per team to start off the season, but already some interesting results.
On opening night Canberra - who are still without Leilani Mitchell & Marianna Tolo - destroyed Sydney.
In the televised game yesterday (which I will put on Youtube in a couple of days) Perth fell to Adelaide. Last night the title favourites Melbourne had a shock loss to wooden spoon favourites Bendigo in a game that the bookies had Melbourne at $1.01 and Bendigo $12.00 for the win.
Today the reigning champs, Townsville, were beaten in their own building by Dandenong - another result not many would have tipped. (Certainly not the great Michele Timms, who is on a WNBL podcast this season and managed to predict all 4 results incorrectly)
Big performers included Kia Nurse, Alex Bunton, Nia Coffey, Marena Whittle, Betnijah Laney and Suzy Batkovic.
Sydney 78 (Bunton 27p 7r, Smart 16p 5r, Tupaea 12p, A.Wilson 10p 4a, Snell 7p 5r 5a)
Canberra 97 (Nurse 26p, Scherf 22p 5r 4a, McLaren 14p 3b, Rocci 11p, K.Wilson 9p 8r 11a, Griffin 8p 7r 4a)
Boxscore
Perth 66 (Taylor 16p 6r, Schwagmeyer 15p, Steindl 14p 5r, McPhee 11p 5r)
Adelaide 78 (Coffey 19p 15r, Planeta 16p 7r, Nicholson 15p 5r, Seekamp 10p 4a, Blicavs 9p)
Boxscore
YouTube
Melbourne 72 (Talbot 20p, Allen 18p 5a, O`Hea 14p 6r, George 10p 11r, Magbegor 4p 6r)
Bendigo 82 (Whittle 21p 4s, Payne 16p 5r, Tobin 15p 9r 5s 3b, Hurst 12p)
Boxscore
Townsville 68 (Batkovic 20p 16r, Samuels 16p 7r, Cocks 6p 8r, Madgen 6p 6r)
Dandenong 73 (Cole 18p 7r, Laney 16p 12r 5a, Lavey 13p 5a, Jarry 11p 7r, Pedersen 2p 11r)
Boxscore

Once again, marginal players at the WNBA level feel like superstars in the WNBL.
I’m curious if Magbegor got into early foul trouble. Only 23 min total game time.
This might not be the best team for her to showcase herself for the WNBA draft. All the other starters took at least 12 shots, leaving Magbegor with only 4 shots taken. Even “pass first” PG Lindsay Allen took 12 shots. Hopefully they’ll be better matchups down the road for her.

Four road wins has to be pretty unusual.
Sadly, geniussports seems to have gone backwards from where it was last year, when it was halfway decent. Sportingpulse isn't perfect either, but at least it's something that I am used to. |

Some do; others come down here and still don't look that good.
For the ones that elevate their games it's a good thing for their WNBA teams IMO.
