Since Z and Boyd are up there in T’s I have to ask for a refresher. Is it 7 Ts for a suspension or 8? The Libs in recent years have held their Ts to a minimum.

In regard to WNBA officiating, there’s also been a ton of turnover in the last few seasons. I’d speculate that perhaps the W’s scrutinization of every call might be playing a factor. I don’t blame the league for doing that, mind you. But I also have to wonder if the pay and scrutiny make it not worth it, especially if refs can get as good or better gigs elsewhere.
I used to know all the refs. It seems now there’s quite a few with just a handful of years of WNBA experience.

That's why the WNBA officiating and women's college officiating is worse than the men's side. If men and women are equally good at officiating, and there ten times more men officiating than women, then by ability, 90% of officials should be men. It's not about talent, it's about numbers. |
Talent is also a part. Better officials get placed on men's games.

I think Liz’s rep got her the T last night, had she not been looking at the ref when she yelled she probably wouldn’t have gotten T’d up. Passion for the game is good, directing it at the ref not good.

I just looked at it again, and it seems like it could have been an f-bomb.

😂 I’ve hear two versions, one Storm fan at the game said she yelled towards the ref, another, not sure if she was at the game, said she just yelled. Digging on the other hand screams at every bucket she makes 🙄

7th, 9th, 11th, 13th etc are each a one-game suspension. Cambage and Reeve both one tech away from hitting the Taurasi Line at 7.

I was at the game, but on the opposite baseline so I couldn't see it. In the wide shot of the video, it's clear that she's yelling directly at the ref.

I don't know if the WNBA has a rule for reevaluating a technical after the fact (I believe the NBA does, at least in the playoffs) but today's technical was a travesty. The idea that she may have to sit down for a game if she gets another technical because of a BS call like that truly undermines the game. Not even the Seattle announcers (who are, granted, probably the fairest in the WNBA) saw any reason for a T, and to call it in a 1 point game in the final two minutes is shameful.
Perhaps the WNBA should institute a rule where refs have to sit out a game after they call an unwarranted technical. |
The W can definitely rescind technicals. They used to do it all the time for Diana when Donna O was in charge. |
They still rescind technicals. |
I know. Two have been rescinded this season

I was actually wondering about flagrants and how they relate to technicals. During the Wings game, Liz got a flagrant AND a technical. We all thought that she was gone when the T was called. Even Liz was halfway down the tunnel when they called her back. The flagrant was so much more deserving of being ejected from the game than the T. It seemed weird that the flagrant wasn't worse in all ways than the technical.
Can anybody explain the difference and how they are tracked and fined?

Technical Fouls and Ejections. During the 2018 season, the following progressive technical foul and ejection schedules
will apply to players and coaches.
(1) Regular Season
Technical Fouls 1-3: $200 fine each
Technical Fouls 4-6: $400 fine each (with a warning letter sent when the violator reaches her 5th technical foul)
Technical Foul 7: $800 fine plus one-game suspension#
Each Additional Technical Foul: $800 fine
Each Two Additional Technical Fouls (9, 11, 13): $800 fine plus one-game suspension
# If a player or coach receives a 7th or 9th technical foul during that team’s final regular season game and that team will be
participating in the playoffs, the player or coach would be suspended for the first playoff game.
# If a player or coach receives a 7th or 9th technical foul during that team’s final regular season game and that team will be
NOT in playoffs, the player or coach would be suspended for the first regular-season game of the following season.
NOTE: Players will be fined for technical fouls committed during pre-season in accordance with the Regular Season
schedule above, but the number of technical fouls will be re-set to zero at the start of the Regular Season.
(2) Playoffs
Technical Fouls 1-2: $200 fine each
Technical Foul 3: $400 fine (with a warning letter sent when the violator reaches her 3rd technical foul)
Technical Foul 4: $800 fine plus one-game suspension
Each Additional Technical Foul: $800 fine
Each Two Additional Technical Fouls (6, 8, 10, etc.): $800 fine plus one-game suspension
...
During the 2018 season, the following progressive Flagrant foul and suspension schedules will apply to players.
The League Office has the option, following its review of any game, to reclassify a flagrant foul or to classify as flagrant any
foul not called a flagrant during a game. In addition, the League Office may impose a fine and/or suspension upon any
player who commits a flagrant foul at any time during the regular season, preseason or playoffs (regardless of whether the
point levels described below have been reached.)
(1) Regular Season
Player at 3 points commits a Flagrant 2 foul: automatic 1 game suspension
Player at 4 or 5 points commits a Flagrant 1 foul: automatic 1 game suspension
Player at 4 or 5 points commits a Flagrant 2 foul: automatic 2 game suspension
Player at 6 or more points commits a Flagrant 1 or 2 foul: automatic 2 game suspension
NOTE: The Regular Season rules above also apply to any flagrant fouls committed during pre-season, but the number of
flagrant fouls will be re-set to zero at the start of the Regular Season.
(2) Playoffs
Player at 2 points commits a Flagrant 2 foul: automatic 1 game suspension
Player at 3 or 4 points commits a Flagrant 1 foul: automatic 1 game suspension
Player at 3 or 4 points commits a Flagrant 2 foul: automatic 2 game suspension
Player at 5 points or more commits a Flagrant 1 or 2 foul: automatic 2 game suspension
Points are 1 for a Flagrant 1 and 2 for a Flagrant 2

Thanks Plight. From those rules, it is pretty obvious that flagrants are worse than technicals, which is as it should be. So, anybody have a list of the top players with flagrants this year?

Doesn’t it seem like people feel the refs always screwed up by calling/not calling fouls that hurt their team? Seems like a lot of complaining about the refs is fan bias.

Thornton muscle flexed after a basket with a glance at Zellous who had fouled her. That caused Zellous to do the same after a Thornton foul on her, but they gave her a tech because she looked right at Thornton (who had her back to Zellous) when she did it while shaking her head yes and maybe saying yes.

I still wouldn't be surprised if Taurasi was the first to 7. Just because...

Middle ground is a fair place in "Liz Cambage vs. officials" issue. It does seem there's been overabundance of technicals recently. At same time, she's used some language she shouldn't. The last T vs. Storm seemed like was just for a look, but maybe officials had had it by then. |

I called that technical vs. Storm absurd. Was referring to language throughout games. Just wrote you were one of the best feel-good stories in the league. We're all happy you are back in the WNBA and thrilled to see your talent. I will refrain from any more "advice." Best wishes. |
