Monday Poll time!

All previous MVPs have met five standards

At least 43.4 FG%
At least 15.5 ppg
No more than three games missed
Play for a .500 or better team
Leads her team in scoring

Players who meets at least four of these standards are included in the poll

Current fg%

Moore:44.3%
Taurasi:43.6%

Does Maya now jump into the top 5 now that she's surpassed the 43.6% threshold?

Taurasi's close to being eliminated from MVP contention based on these idiotic unwritten rules:roll:

You have a better way to choose candidates?

I suppose they don't, I appreciate your standard. Very Happy

Question, when has an MVP not met those five standards?

pilight's rules are written above so they aren't unwritten rules.

Never. Every MVP has met all five standards. Currently, Hayes, Moore, Parker, Stewart, and Taurasi meet all five.

I used to do it that way. People complained all the time about how subjective it was.

I'm not saying a player should win the MVP if they shoot less than 43% from the field...But they shouldn't be disqualified without factoring in how they impact the game in other areas(Defense,Clutch shot maker,Rebounding,Assist)

It doesn't disqualify them from winning the MVP. It does disqualify from this poll which uses 5 standard that every previous MVP has met. Using 5 standards that every previous MVP has met is a reasonable standard. Lowering it to 4 of 5 standards lets in even more player options considering no one has one who met only 4 of 5 standards in the past, ever. One year a player will probably win MVP without meeting these 5 standards, but it hasn't happened in the first 20 years so you will really have to be having an amazing season with other factors to do so, and therefor only including players who meet at least 4 of these 5 standards is a more than reasonable equation to create a list.

Also the 5 standards aren't something that was set by a committee, the 5 standards have been set by the reality of those who have been selected as MVP. There may be a day, it could even be this year a player on a sub .500 team wins, or someone who is the 2nd best scorer on their team wins, or someone who averages 13ppg wins but that has simply never happened as of yet.

In terms of DT specifically she is not going to win MVP over Griner, unless Griner misses a bunch of games (you have to be the MVP of your own team to be MVP of the league), or DT's scoring average goes through the roof, in which case she would be the #1 scoring option on her team returning to meeting 4 or the 5 standards, and just as her percentage could go down her percentage could also go up keeping her above the percentage standard and probably making her more valuable to her team anyway.

I think EDD will have a good shot this season despite mussing more than 3 games so the standards might meet their first defeat, but Stewie is still ahead of her ATM IMO.

The 5 standards are what might be called a "revealed preference" of the voters. There might be a year no player meets all 5 standards and this could be it.

It's not looking good for Maya...She's only shooting 41.9% from the field...Taurasi's also close to the fg% minimum(43.6)
