Actually, I consider outdrawing an odd form of football an accomplishment.

Lead-ins matter as the final game of the College World Series averaged 1,890,000 viewers.

And only one has a team. If that is normal for Portland perhaps they should get a team.

Been there done that , they did not support Or shall i say Blazer management did not support . I remember some decent crowds back in the hay at the Rose Garden.

They may have tuned in to watch Mercedes Russell.

SEA vs LVA on ESPN2 could be the next record breaker.

Sydney Wiese is a much bigger star here in Oregon. I honestly didn't even know Russell was born in Springfield before the Storm signed her.

Almost certainly due to Oregon State playing in (and winning) the College World Series game beforehand. Little Rock and Fort Smith are too small markets for this data set, but the game probably rated well there too.

Yeah - viewers watch the game before, then leave the TV on, and go do something else.

My parents actually watched the game and they normally don't. But they were browsing and saw it on and decided to watch. I think this may be the first time that ever happened. I have taken them to a few Storm games in the past and they liked it, and they like basketball, especially Wisconsin men's college ball.

I read that when Nielson sets a household up for monitoring for ratings purposes, they make it so that falling asleep on the couch or leaving the room won't create false ratings. Each member of the household gets a remote control that they have to point at the Nielson box and click every so often to show that they are present and awake.

Yes, they get a lot of money to make the most precise system possible.

The baseball game averaged a 9.1 in the Portland market so it was most likely higher at the end of the game when the title was clinched. If it was at a 10.0 (very conservative) at that point, it would be the equivalent of all of the households tuning in to 25 minutes of the 103 minutes that the basketball game was shown. 12.5 might be conservative too, but that would be around 20 minutes of basketball on average for each house before changing the channel or turning off the TV.

In other comparative numbers, the NBA Summer League games on NBATV on Monday averaged 204,000 then 228,000 then 190,00 viewers. BIG3 averaged 921,000 viewers in their bump up to FOX broadcast.

I wonder if the overrun of the baseball game (first 15 minutes) may have actually been captured for the WNBA game. Using a 10 rating for the first segment of 8 would bump up the overall WNBA game rating by over a point. The 15 minute breakdowns would be intriguing.

As for Portland being a potential WNBA site, it was already tried and didn't go well. The Fire burned out quickly.

Due to management mostly , they actually had nice crowds when the big teams came in town (Houston, NY , LA & Sacto )

The Fire was averaging better attendance than the Storm when Paul Allen pulled the plug on the team due to his self-inflicted financial mess and the league changing the franchise agreement.

The Fire averaged over 8k in all three of their seasons. Sucks the former Blazers ownership pulled the plug. The ABL's Portland Power also drew well, though not in the 8k range. Their was a short rumor that the MLS' Timbers(who also own the NWSL's Thorns) were interested in a WNBA franchise, but nothing has resurfaced recently.

Yeah, I forget which rules apply for which type of ratings so that may be the case. PR people will always use the highest numbers they have. The real point is that this Portland number is definitely impacted by baseball.

On Tuesday, Summer League games on NBATV averaged 172,000 then 132,000 then 160,000 viewers. The ESPN2 game on at the same time as that middle game averaged 298,000 viewers.

On NBATV, Summer League games averaged 131,000 then 91,000 then 113,000 then 169,000 viewers.

I think the twitter @Shea Serrano connection may explain some of the rise - but maybe it is also due to the games being broadcast on twitter. They had a of people looking at the games - maybe some of them are sticking around and looking at television broadcasts.

The video game aspect really reached out to the younger generation and i think they are starting to pay a bit more attention. Not a lot , but a little more than usual .

Also, gambling. The W has apparently done very well on Fan Duel.

Good point on the gamblers. For a while it was easy to win on Fan Duel, then the serious gamblers seemed to have figured it out.
