Your deeper point at the time was actually correct given the context. Coleman was talked about as a 4 spot player and actually used at the 4 spot on opening night. And it hurt us. And you were rightfully skeptical about her in that role immediately. Since then she’s been used exclusively at the 3...in a Katie Smith offense of driving and kicking out. It’s well suited to Coleman’s main positive attribute. I think the question at the time regarded mainly how she’d be used. Now that it turns out she’s being used in accordance with her positive attributes it looks a lot better than it did at first. |
Technically, Coleman was playing 4 when the Liberty went to the small line-up. Allen was guarding Davis/Christmas, Zellous covered Thornton, and Marissa had Stevens. However, on offense she essentially functioned as a second 3 in that spread alignment. So you're right about Coleman, "being used in accordance with her positive attributes."
Nurse makes me think of 2015 when Boyd and Wiggins joined the Liberty. In terms of energy, Kia combines the aggressiveness of Boyd with the Wiggins agitation factor. If we could ever get Boyd healthy again, it would be fun to see her on the court with Nurse.

I've been setting my table to eat my words about Coleman. Has she been a great asset for New York? No. But she's getting the job done for what she was brought in for. She may be a one year temp, but I'm quite surprised. As I am with R. Allen. It may be that she's getting minutes due to the short bench, but Allen's D has been amazing this season. Only three games in, but I guess I see why Smith waited for Allen.

Congratulations to Katie Smith for her first win in the 2018 season ...
When things were going bad for us, she didn't shake her head and sit
on the bench with her hands folded over her chest ...she tried things ...
and never stopped coaching...when she found something that worked
in the fourth quarter she stuck with it ...
A great game and just what the team needed and also the fans !

Three games is, of course, a ridiculously small sample. But Nurse has reminded me of Wiggins as an extremely annoying defender. I don't have a stat, but it seems like Nurse has drawn quite a few offensive fouls, including one last night from Diggins-Smith at a rather crucial time.

Oh true, duh on my part. You’re right. Coleman did play stretch 4. It does go to show how valuable the 3 ball can be in coming back from deficits with quick runs.
My best hope for the Libs is that they perform like Indy in 2015. Lots of early injuries and a rough start with a healthy playoff team and a tremendous late-season run. This team is constructed similarly to that one in some ways...including 2 former Indy players.

I think my fav trait of Nurse is her propensity for drawing offensive fouls away from the ball. It likely will have an affect on how teams approach inbound plays against the Libs. A fringe benefit is seeing how annoyed her opponents get.
