Quote:
The Milwaukee Bucks plan to interview San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon for the franchise's head coach opening, league sources told ESPN.

Hammon is the NBA's first female assistant coach, and now will be the first to interview for a head coaching job in the league. Hammon isn't considered a frontline candidate on a Bucks list that included at least 10 possible candidates, but Milwaukee ownership and general manager Jon Horst were intrigued enough to ask the Spurs for permission to speak with her.

The Bucks met with Hammon in 2017 about the team's GM vacancy, despite the fact that she had no front office experience.

The Bucks are meeting with Spurs assistant Ettore Messina on Saturday, and former Charlotte coach Steve Clifford and former New Orleans coach Monty Williams next week, league sources said. Former Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer will also meet.

Hammon, 41, is the fourth Spurs assistant to interview for head coaching openings this spring. Messina, James Borrego and Ime Udoka have interviewed for several openings.

Not to downplay her qualities as a coach, but I feel like she's going to continue to get a lot of interviews. It makes the teams look progressive and like potentially outside-the-box thinkers, without having to actually take the risk itself. Throwing her on a list and talking to her is an easy PR win.

Also i dont know if being the headcoach for the bucks is a good idea as your first headcoachexperience. They are a young team with young stars that need a lot of discipline from an experienced coach that they respect from the start.

Whatever you do, don't read the comments on Sports center's Facebook post about this. Truly some terrible people out there.

She's worked for Dolan before, she knows better than to take that job

She got her start there when nobody else would take a chance on her, so it would be like coming full circle.

It would have been a good PR move by Dolan, especially now
when he is trying to sell the Liberty.
IMO Becky would be better than who was picked to be the new Knicks coach

She would have been crazy to turn it down. The Knicks HC job is one of the premier positions for an NBA coach. You get a 4 - 5 year deal, work for 1 or 2 and get fired and the paychecks keep rolling in for years. What could possibly be better?

What does it mean to say that the New York Knicks should have interviewed or hired Becky Hammon as their head coach? The Knicks are owned by Hideous Lord Jimmy (Dolan), one of the worst people on the planet. His fiefdom has been a hotbed of sexual harassment, thanks in good part to HLJ's best friend forever, Isiah Thomas.

So HLJ should have made a historic move in the advancement of women in sports? Really? And Donald Trump should nominate Anita Hill for the next Supreme Court vacancy? And Vladimir Putin should dedicate his regime to promoting LGBT rights in Russia and around the world? Any other unlikely ideas?

You were the one who changed the thread by bringing the Knicks into it. I made no comment till that happened.

Didn't the WNBA assign Becky Hammon to New York? It's not as if she was picked through some tryouts after trying other teams said no.

Really? The team didn’t have a choice? Wouldn’t mind seeing the documentation.

Hopefully this link will work, its under career transactions. Back then I believe the league and the front office was very hands on. Free agency didn't start until 2003. Now as far who is assigned I don't know if teams had a choice, but I don't believe they did for the most part, I think teams could request a player, but there was no guarantee of getting that player.

I think Becks has a real shot at a head coaching job in the NBA but she might have to start at the bottom first. A destination not as coveted at the current Bucks are. With Antekoumpo as a headliner and them making the playoffs for the first time in forever, I'm thinking they are gonna go with previous head coaching credentials in the end. Its not like she don't have a shot in hell. Its just that they are gonna go for more experience. And the ownership is changing hands too. Then again I might be totally wrong. Guess we will see.

if i were her, i wouldn't take a nba head coach job. at least not right now. the players would eat her alive. how many experienced former men head coaches got fired because of players, even the big name ones. unless you are the super big names with championship rings. but still, the superstars dictate how long the coaches stay, live and die in the nba.

Not sure what you mean by "right now". Stars have been getting coaches fired since forever. Magic Johnson forced Paul Westhead out after they'd already won a title together.

An Open Letter About Female Coaches

https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/pau-gasol-becky-hammon

Quote:
The argument that I see most often is thankfully the one that’s easiest to disprove: It’s this idea that, at the absolute highest level of basketball, a woman isn’t capable of coaching men. “Yeah, female coaches are fine coaching women’s college basketball, or the WNBA,” the argument goes. “But the NBA? The NBA is different.”

First, I’ve just gotta tell you: If you’re making that argument to anyone who’s actually played any high-level basketball, you’re going to seem really ignorant.
