She was something else.

I'm no expert on any of this but from what I've read Callas had this thing she did with her voice that was a love it or hate it thing, caused her to be dubbed the Great Ugly Voice (she had many nicknames) but it sounds like she's turning her vocal chords inside out or upside down. You can really here it on this Habanera. But making that sound with her voice is allegedly what ended her career because it ruined her ability to control her vocal chords decades earlier than normal aging would have. She literally was toast by her late thirties. But some of the sounds she makes as represented here are THE sounds of opera of the 20th century.

I think this is her last performance ever. Opera singing career had been dead for 20 years already. But she still had some beautiful music to make. My favorite sound is when she drops out of the falsetto or head tones or whatever the eff you call it and just fucking sings. Not opera, but amazing.
