PostPosted: 04/05/18 8:53 pm    ::: Late Training Camp Arrivals 2018 Reply Reply with quote

It is time to start thinking about which players will still be overseas when training camp opens. I will list out everything that has already been scheduled and try to wait to add any leagues that have not provided everything yet. Camps open on the 29th and the roster deadline is May 17th. If you think I'm missing a league, let me know.

Australia, China, South Korea, and Lebanon are done. Israel will definitely be done by then.

Slovakia (Devereaux Peters and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough) does not have games listed beyond the minimum yet, but could end as soon as the 16th.

The Russian round robin for 9th-11th place ends on the 17th so Evelyn Akhator and Lindsay Allen will be done then.

The regular season in Greece does not end until the 29th so Blake Dietrick will definitely be late.

I am assuming the results of Spain's playoffs will end up with another Girona-Avenida final. The semifinals will end a week before camp and the finals will end either the 29th or May 3rd. Assuming those two teams are involved, the players left would be Angel Robinson and Adaora Elonu.

Game 1 of the finals in Italy will not start until May 5th with at least two more games after that. I will not try to speculate on which teams will be involved at that point.

The earliest that any team in France will finish their season is May 8th with semifinals ending on the 12th. Last year, some of the teams that were no longer in championship contention let their WNBA players leave early. The finals will not end until either the 24th, 26th, or 28th. The consolation finals will end on either the 19th or 22nd. The Playdowns lineup has been finalized and will not end until the 12th. The only WNBA implications of that are for Mondeville if anyone was hoping that Lisa Berkani was going to show up for camp.

Leagues that I am waiting on for more schedule information are Sweden, Romania, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and the rest of Russia's postseason.

Jessica January did not play in her team's latest game in Romania so she might have been allowed to leave.

Spanish media is suggesting that Ameryst Alston left without permission after the team's last regular season game. Depending on how the team feels about it, this could actually be a big deal and they could delay the Letter of Clearance that would allow her to play for another team.

She only has this one shot to make it why not be there at the beginning to at least secure a thought of a spot. Shes been close to making the liberty roster more and more each year. This could be the year so she needs to be on time.

She almost certainly would have been done in time for camp in either case.

Depending on how the team feels that this went down, they could tie up everything in paperwork and prevent her from suiting up in the WNBA. They could also make it difficult or block her from playing elsewhere overseas in the future it they turn it into a bigger dispute.

I could see them hypothetically being able to make things complicated for her next overseas contract, but could they actually do anything to block her from the WNBA? I've never been sure that the W really counted as a FIBA league, or that they recognised FIBA as having any level of control or oversight over them.

Thanks for doing this thread again, awhom111. Always very useful.

USA Basketball has instructions for Letters of Clearance so I am assuming they get processed, although I guess that they could just use them for transfers in the other direction. They wouldn't be able to outright block her from the WNBA without complicity from the Spanish federation, but a paperwork "delay" might still cause hassles.

Obviously the WNBA does not follow FIBA guidelines on other stuff, namely doping.

The only Letter of Clearance issue that I can remember off the top of my head here is when somebody forgot that Ferguson needed one after his season was over in Australia and he was not able to play in the NBA Summer League until it was resolved.

Slovakia ended in a sweep so those players are done.

Israel also had a sweep, but they were going to be done before training camp no matter how many games it went.

Poland's quarterfinals are done. The semifinals can run as late as the 22nd and there is usually a third place series in addition to the finals. Here are the players affected:
Wisla: Cheyenne Parker
Polkowice: Alysha Clark, Temi Fagbenle, Alana Beard (still has not played since injury)

What injury do you speak of?

For those wondering, Julia Reisingerova's season is over. She didn't play much down the stretch so an injury might be involved there too.

Park Ji-Su is likely to have plenty of national team plans.

We still don't know what Diamond's schedule will be like for the Turkish League Playoffs.

Nobody actually knows. It's even a mystery in Poland. Apparently bad enough for them to just let her go home though.

Beard is still playing overseas? I didn't know that.

For one glorious game:

I think the idea was to sign later in the season to get in shape before the WNBA season, but it did not work as well as last year.

I feel bad for her if she has an injury that she had to leave her overseas team. It's amazing she's still playing professional basketball.

Sweden finishes on the 23rd, 25th, or 28th so there's not much time for Jen Hamson before she hits training camp.

Italy's semifinalists have been decided, but I have not seen a schedule yet. The series start on the 21st and are best of five.

Here are the teams left:
Schio: Cecilia Zandalasini, Jolene Anderson, Endy Miyem
Venezia: Riquna Williams, Camille Little
Ragusa: Dearica Hamby, Astou Ndour
Napoli: Jacki Gemelos (I think Kelsey Bone returned a while ago)

The Czech League likely ends on May 2nd with Games 4 and 5 on the 4th and 6th if miracles happen. That affects DeWanna Bonner, who has not played recently, Amanda Zahui B, and Leticia Romero.

The Turkish League has not announced a schedule yet, but we know the matchups and which players are done. I would assume that none of the players in the playoffs will make it to the opening of training camp even with sweeps.

Yakin Dogu University (Courtney Vandersloot, Kayla McBride, Jantel Lavender) vs Galatasaray (Allie Quigley, Kaela Davis)
Hatay (Courtney Paris, Leilani Mitchell, Hind Ben Abdelkader) vs Mersin (Bria Hartley, Krystal Thomas)
Fenerbahce (Kia Vaughn, Ana Dabovic, Kelsey Plum) vs Besiktas (Shavonte Zellous, Erica Wheeler)
Botas (Chelsea Gray, Kiah Stokes) vs Cukurova (Erlana Larkins, Diamond DeShields)

That means that Jasmine Thomas, Brittney Sykes, and Courtney Williams are done.

The 27th or 28th is the earliest that anyone can be eliminated from the Turkish playoffs.

Russia has announced part of their playoff schedule.

The finals will end on the 2nd, 4th, or 7th. That would be Ekaterinburg (Maya Moore, Brittney Griner, Kristi Toliver, LaToya Pringle, Jamierra Faulkner, Raisa Musina) vs Dynamo Kursk (Epiphanny Prince, Angel McCoughtry, Nneka Ogwumike, Maria Vadeeva)

The 3rd place series will end on the 28th, 29th, or 2nd (Alex Bentley, Emma Cannon, Brionna Jones)

The 7th place series has not been scheduled yet (Cierra Burdick), but should be no worse than the 3rd place series.

That 7th place series in Russia will end on the 24th or 27th.

The Italian League Semifinals Game 3s are scheduled for the 25th and 26th, Game 4s are on the 27th and 28th, and if there are Game 5s, they will be on the 30th.

The semifinals are not done yet, but we have a schedule for the finals in Poland.

Wisla (Cheyenne Parker) will finish on the 27th or 29th. Polkowice (Alysha Clark, Temi Fagbenle) will finish on the 30th, 1st, or 4th.

Finals are also scheduled in Hungary. The championship will feature Erica McCall for Szekszard and Yvonne Turner and Aleksandra Crvendakic for Sopron, but probably not Alaina Coates. It will end on either the 3rd, 6th, or 10th. Danielle Robinson has not played for Gyor recently, but their season ends on the 27th or 30th. Ivey Slaughter and Pecsi will be done on the 21st or 24th so she has plenty of time to get back.

Hungary's third place series is done, but Danielle Robinson did not play in any of the games.

Napoli was eliminated in Italy, so Jacki Gemelos is free.

Besiktas was eliminated in Turkey so Shavonte Zellous and Erica Wheeler are done. Wheeler did not play in either playoff game. Mersin and Hatay will play a currently unscheduled third game.

Poland's third place series will go a third game on Sunday so Cheyenne Parker is still there.

Does that mean she left or she’s hurt?

Is Tiffany Jackson still playing overseas?

Twitter seems to suggest that she is physically in Minnesota. Whether that means that she wouldn't have been able to contribute in Hungary or whether they just didn't care that much about third place is unclear.

Jackson finished a few weeks ago in Israel.

Russia's third place series is done so Alex Bentley, Emma Cannon, and Brionna Jones are done.

The other series in Italy will not conclude until Monday.

Galatasaray (Allie Quigley and Kaela Davis) and Botas (Chelsea Gray and Kiah Stokes) were eliminated in Turkey. The third game of the only series still going will be played on Monday.

Last year, some of the players left France after their teams were eliminated from championship contention so Sugar Rodgers might be done after losing today.

Spain is done.

One Turkish Semifinals series has the first three games scheduled so the soonest one could finish is the 7th.
