Moriah Jefferson was interviewed last night on the Mountain West Network during the second quarter of the Nevada vs. San Diego State Women's Basketball game.

Fast forward to about the 26 minute mark to listen to the five minute interview.

Found an old Women's History Month article I wrote on the WBL (1978-81) for the Charlotte Sting website many moons ago, and thought I would repurpose it for LasVegasAces.com

Since we have an ear into the LV front office: is there any way to get the number of years each signing is for? The league always claims it's a team policy but since all the other teams would have the info, the only ones you are hiding this from is the fans.

Like your prospect reports. Thanks for posting them.

BTW - the first link above has a link to Ariel Atkins, but the Kelsey Mitchell report comes up in place of Atkins.

One of the prouder moments of my professional media relations career.

https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/basketball/aces-wnba/pioneers-cardte-hicks-musiette-mckinney-embrace-las-vegas-aces/

Here is a long story that I think pays off in the end. Your mileage may vary.

Those of you who have been around forever may remember that I attended a reunion of the first professional women's basketball league, the WBL (1978-81), about 15 years ago when I worked in the league office.

While there I met a number of wonderful players, coaches and administrators, but the person who stood out most to me was a woman named Cardte Hicks. She was just 5-8, but is the first woman to dunk in a pro game. She also was just a ball of fire from a personality standpoint. The kind of person you feel like you've known forever the second you meet them.

We kept in touch a little bit, as she lived in Sacramento, and was a Monarchs fan, but I didn't speak to her for well over a decade, and lost her contact info.

Three weeks ago, as I was trying to think of Women's History Month pitches for our local media, it occurred to me that we might have former WBL players living in Las Vegas. I reached out to John Molina and a woman named Karra Porter (who organized that WBL reunion and wrote the book "Mad Seasons" - https://www.ebay.com/itm/MAD-SEASONS-STORY-OF-FIRST-WOMENS-PROFESSIONAL-BASKETBALL-By-Karra-Porter-/183020499267) to see if they knew of anybody living in market.

They said they would check and get back to me, but in the meantime, I thought I would check to see if Cardte was on facebook, and if she had any connections.

I tracked her down, and sent her a friend request. She accepted, and the first thing I noticed ... she now lives in Henderson, Nevada nine miles from where I live. What are the odds?

So we set up an interview with Cardte and one of our local TV stations, and they shoot a sit-down with her.

That evening, that same TV station is covering Moriah Jefferson at a CR event. During breaks in the action, they are talking about Cardte and the interview from earlier in the day. A woman at the table next to them says, "excuse me, but are you all talking about Cardte Hicks?"

Turns out this woman, Musiette "Moose" McKinney, who has worked at UNLV for quite some time, played on Cardte's San Francisco team in the WBL. She hadn't seen her in nearly three decades. Once again, what are the odds?

So yesterday, we invited Cardte out to meet with Moriah Jefferson and Sequoia Holmes in a round table with the TV station, and we surprised Cardte by having Moose walk up behind her during the interview.

Tears flowed, hugs were shared, and a beautiful trip down memory lane unfolded over the next hour.

Moose was the de facto team photographer back in the day, and she had everything from media guides to polaroids (look it up young 'uns) in her scrap books.

The Review Journal wrote the article linked above, and the local TV station is turning this into a two part interview to air over the next two weeks. When they post links online I will share with the group.

Thanks for reading!

What in the greek yogurt is going on here? The Aces have 4 draft picks to bring into camp. Maybe Laimbeer really is interested in taking international picks late. But Reeve is claiming international players are wanting to come over right away.

Jacki Gemelos has been playing overseas, but she's the US player Geno denounced for breaking her early commitment. For that alone, I wish her all the best! http://www.fullcourt.com/clay-kallam/4851/jacki-gemelos-makes-long-delayed-collegiate-debut

PG: Jefferson/Plum
SG: McBride/Holmes/Lawrence
SF: Young/Nared
PF: Wilson/Harrison
C: Bone/Swords/Park

Wonder if trader Bill would consider trading Hamby & Coffey for something? Hamby sticks if Park doesn't show. Coffey could stick over either Holmes or Lawrence.

Isabelle Harrison does not have the consistent range on her shot to play the four, nor can she defend athletic, mobile PFs.

I can see William over Colson if BL wants three PGs.

If she comes off the bench then she wont be defending the best athletic mobiles PF's the whole time

I'd like to think Lawrence is capable of beating out Sequoia Holmes

It's hard to see William over anybody. She'll have to step to the side.

I had no problem with her mid range game last season. Shes improved dramatically , her physicality is what SFO will adore the most. I dont she gets traded at all .

The 4 posts that matter are Bone, Izzy, A'ja, and Swords. Ayayi is a skinny 6' er so definitely not a C - a tweener I think.

Hamby is next to worthless and if you have T. Young and Hamby on the floor at the same time, you're in deep trouble. If Coffey can't make the transition to SF, she's probably gone as well. I probably keep Coffey over Hamby if I must choose, but since there's plenty of room on this roster, making cuts shouldn't be nearly as difficult as on some others.
