Lynx, with roster virtually set, looking to WNBA draft for camp competition

http://m.startribune.com/lynx-with-roster-virtually-set-looking-to-wnba-draft-for-camp-competition/479413903/

This author is saying some of the same things I’ve been saying ever since the Lynx finished up their off season moves.

Quote:
The team is high on the potential of Italian forward Cecelia Zadalasini

Interpretation: The Lynx are unlikely to draft competition for backup SF. Rules out picks like Nared, Muldrow, and Shakayla Thomas.

Quote:
The Lynx have, in the past, used second- and third-round picks by taking international players that aren’t ready or interested in coming to the WNBA right away. That avenue is not as available this season, Reeve said, as most of the top international talent are wanting to come to the WNBA right away.

That’s different.

Quote:
Fagbenle is not an absolute lock. And while Kizer has been signed, as Reeve said, “We’re not married to anything.”

Post players the Lynx could be interested in
Monique Billings (UCLA)
Mercedes Russell (Tennessee)
Marie Gulich (Oregon State)
Stephanie Mavunga (Ohio State)
Myisha Hines-Allen (Louisville)
Kaylee Jensen (Oklahoma State)

That seems to be their post ranking. I’ll have to check to see if it’s his ranking or Reeve’s, but I don’t think this author is into women’s basketball enough to derive at his own ranking.

Quote:
The Lynx could look locally in the third round, with a good chance the team could take Gophers guard Carlie Wagner if she’s available late.

Safety net. They’re going to make sure she gets the honor of being drafted.

Can we be for sure any rookie in this draft are going to "Make" them at a higher rate than existing Vets ? Their % in college means zilch in the W , the line is further back . Id take my chances with existing vets being relied on to spread the floor more so than a rookie.

Always hard to be sure about anything with incoming rookies, but with the existing players we have their numbers from playing in the league. Gray sub-30% from 3 as a rookie, Glory Johnson started chucking them up last year and managed 31%, KCK 29% last year and 32% the year before (32% career), Powers 31% (although better as a rookie, so hopefully she bounces back), Chong a dismal 24%, Thornton 28%. League average is typically somewhere around 34%. Diggins improved significantly to 35% last year, and Kaela Davis shot remarkably well from outside (helped by only shooting about 1 three per game), but that's about it for good three-point shooters. Having Cambage as a threat inside could help, but drafting someone with an outside shot could also definitely be useful. Most of the existing bunch you're happy to let shoot.

Well the numbers would be more factual if the incoming rookies had actually played a WNBA game. So ill choose to defer on making someone a outside threat until they play a few games.

The draft is tomorrow and my taxes aren't due for a few more days, so this seems like the more important way to spend my time.

Mock Draft including snarky comments

1. Las Vegas - A'ja Wilson - Even with Macao, Vegas still gets a lot of business from Asia.
2. Indiana - Azura Stevens - Shorty needs height.
3. Chicago - Kelsey Mitchell - Vandersloot passes, then gets back on defense.
4. Chicago - Deshields - Diamond on the rough streets
5. Seattle - Jordin Canada - Storm makes a play to expand its fan base to over the border only 110 miles away.
6. Dallas - Victoria Vivians - This is the toughest call, but Cambage plus run and gun could be very exciting.
7. Washington - Gabby Williams - Because all they do in DC is talk.
8. Indiana - Lexie Brown - With height at 2, Pokey needs a shooter. Bang, Bang.
9. Connecticut - Kia Nurse - Not necessarily a good fit, but the Sun can't pass on UConn.
10. New York - Marie Gulich - Need to draw from the big German population in Westchester.
11. Los Angeles - Maria Vadeeva - LA doesn't have roster space so why not draft someone who won't play this season.
12. Phoenix - Monique Billings - Between her and Griner at least one should be willing to play tough each game.

I'm warming up to the Mystics selecting Gabby Williams or Victoria Vivians both are type of players who can be building blocks towards winning a WNBA Championships.

Sun looking to get it right at Thursday’s WNBA Draft

https://www.theday.com/connecticut-sun/20180411/sun-looking-to-get-it-right-at-thursdays-wnba-draft

Quote:
Miller received four phone calls during a one-hour span Tuesday about trading the ninth pick (he wasn't getting these calls when Connecticut drafted eighth last year).

Quote:
It’s safe to assume nine of its 12 spots are taken
Jonquel Jones
Chiney Ogwumike
Alyssa Thomas
Morgan Tuck
Shekinna Stricklen
Rachel Banham
Alex Bentley
Jasmine Thomas
Courtney Williams

Banham is in the safe zone!
Ouch to George (cost them #21 pick) and BJones.

Article suggested targets for Connecticut at #9
Ariel Atkins, Texas
Lexie Brown, Duke
Kia Nurse, UConn

Quote:
Nearly everyone thinks the Sun will take Nurse because ties to UConn. There’s a much deeper connection between the two, though, because Miller and the Nurses have a long history together.

Laughing There really is a German International School in White Plains. Unfortunately, the camp day games are at MSG. Otherwise, the biggest collection of Germans probably left when George Washington chased out the Hessians.

Slightly surprising to me, but I guess there's only so many players you can realistically expect to add from this point of the year until the season starts.

The Opinion Page: Drafting. Best available versus need. That's what makes draft day unpredictable. Las Vegas will take the obvious. Beyond that...
Indiana will take Mitchell or Stevens. That choice will affect the rest of the draft, including their own choices. Those will be the first three.
Indiana, with a good plan, can set themselves up rather nicely for their next pick, and if they are realistic, recognizing a two year plan can be their best friend as far as drafting small or big first or later. This draft will test their management.
Beyond that...
Best available versus need.

Sparks looking to build depth, and add a post player, during the WNBA draft

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-wnba-draft-preview-20180411-story.html

Quote:
"So much can happen ahead of us that it's hard to pencil in specific players or even a specific position, but we do need to add depth in the post at some point," Sparks coach Brian Agler said. "No question, we'll take at least one post player."

Post players talked about in the article are Gulich and Billings.

J-Spoon's list of fun draft day trades. These are serious attempts at balanced trades but not to be taken too seriously. If you throw enough darts one is bound to land. (Also way too many NY idea but since they made no moves in free agency this is their chance to shine).

#1 Nope

#2 #2 and #8 for #3 and #4 unlikely unless Chicago desperately wants to move up for Stevens and Pokes is just as happy taking K. Mitchell at #3.

Skipping to #4

#4 #4 (Deshields, Williams, or Vivians) for Harrison Contingent on Indy taking Stevens at #2 Chi gets a good PF, LV gets a big wing

#5 #5 (Deshields, Williams or Vivians) for Jefferson and #13 Seattle gets its heir apparent and can still grab a big post at 13, LV gets a big wing.

#5 #5 (Deshields, Williams or Vivians) for Stokes and #10 Seattle improves it's defense with another big post and can go guard at #10, NY gets a big wing.

#6 #6 (Deshields, Williams or Vivians) for Mchee-Stafford and #16 Dallas gets it big back up defensive center traded for by the previous GM in Atl and a 2nd rounder, Atlanta gets a big wing to back up Angel and gets to forget about the trade that got the last guy fired.

#6 #6 (Deshields, Williams or Vivians) and #18 for Stokes and #10 Dallas gets a back up center and can still bring in a perimeter player at #10, NY gets a big wing at #6 and can bring in some 2nd round picks to fight for the open post spot

#6 #6 (L. Brown) for #9 (Atkins, Canada or Nurse) and George Dallas gets a back up center and fellow Aussie for Liz, and a pick that can fill out the perimeter Conn move up for their first choice of Guards likely to be gone at #9

#7 #7 (Williams or Vivians) for S. Rodgers Washington goes with a Mike T kind of high character 3 and D player instead of a rookie, NY gets a big wing.)

#7 #7 (Williams or Vivians) for Plum and #13, Mike T goes for shooting and scoring off the bench and a high 2nd rounder, BL solves small guard situation and gets big wing.

#8 #8 (Canada or L. Brown) for Clarendon Indy and Pokey decide they want more experience at the PG spot to guide a young team different GM from the one who traded Clarendon, Atl can start R. Montgomery and develop a dynamic young PG behind her for the future.

#8 #8 (Vivians, Billings, Nared) for McGhee-Stafford Atl gets back in the first round and moves on from last years bad trade, Pokey said she wanted to get bigger.

#9 #9 (Russell) for A. Davis and #18 Dallas gets to pick a back up center they like at #9 and can keep the wing they select at #6, while Conn gets a big guard with range and a 2nd 2nd round pick to compete for the 12th spot

#11 #11 (Russell) for Thorton LA gets an experienced high motor 5th post that Agler might play, Dallas gets the back up center they were considering at #6 and gets to keep the big wing they got their instead.

#11 #11 (Billings, Mavunga, Gulich or Atkins, Nared) for C. Parker or Bulgak As above Agler hates rookies might opt for a more experienced player still on rookie scale. Chi can add a big if they missed on Stevens, or if they get Stevens the can bring in another perimeter player.

#12 #12 (Billings, Gulich, Mavunga) for Hamson Contingent on Indy taking Vadeeva at #8 If Indy isn't sure Vadeeva is going to show they can grab a big here and go wing or guard at #14, PX is in win now mode Hamson coming off the bench behind Griner is a better defensive option than a Rookie.

#13 #13 (Billings, Mavunga, Nared, Hines-Allen) for L. Allen. Contingent on NY picking a kind of PG (Canada, Nurse, L. Brown) at #10 BL gets a bigger PG he trusts to run his system off the bench, NY gets to bring another player into camp at a position of greater need SF or Post.

#13 #13 (Billings, Gulich, Mavunga) for R. Williams LA can draft Vadeeva at #11 and if she doesn't show grab a decent 5th post option at #13 LV gets a dynamic scorer to come off the bench behind McBride with experience, it the kind of high risk trade Laimbeer seems to make pay off.

same as above sub in Carson for R. Williams

#17 #17 (Atkins, S. Thomas, Hines-Allen, Muldrow, Scaife) for Zahui B contingent on NY having given up on Amanda and considering waiving her for nothing NY can bring in someone to compete for a spot at #17. Minn can bring in someone with local ties to compete with Fagbenle or Miyem. Also for Shades enjoyment.

Remember there is always that one trade that seem like an over pay for a vet, but they happen. Swords, A. Montgomery, A. Cruz etc.

I dont watch college ball so i dont know much about the players. Can anyone give me some info on Jordin Canada and her potential in the WNBA? Does she have the potential to be a decent backup to Bird right away? Is she a true PG or more a scoring guard? Is she a lot better then Peterson?

Yes she can back up Bird right away. Yes she is a true PG 2.5 to 1 Assist to T/O ratio with 200+ assists this past season averaging more than 7 a game. Yes she is better than Peterson.

Check out her profile at Pilight's site.

Super athletic and fast. Small at 5' 6" but averaged over 3 steal per game and won DPOY awards in the PAC 12.

Is a true floor general, but can also score, a lot, which was part of her role at UCLA with over 17ppg. Gets a lot of her assists off penetration into the lane, and fast breaks.

One knock on her was lack of a 3 point shot, but she did improve her percentages every year, her senior season she shot and made more threes than ever at a decent 38.5%.

Sometimes seems a little out f control, and turns it over, but again she has a very good assist to T/O ration so if you turn the ball over 2.5 times a game, that is a lot until you consider she gets 7 assists in that same game.

Has all the tools to be a great PG in the W. She is probably someone who could get Team USA camp invites in the future.

Canada reminds me of Brittany Boyd, but with a more reliable jump shot. She's very aggressive on both ends of the court -- sometimes out of control. Physically, Canada isn't anywhere near as strong as Boyd. She has a wiry frame like Jefferson.

She also listed as three inches shorter than Boyd. I have real questions about how well she will do based on her size.

I dont , her creativity with the ball and athletiscm will help her get far. If FLB can have a career in the W Jordin Canada will have a long career in the W also .

Yes, but I remember Lobo saying during the 2015 Draft that Boyd was probably more like 5-7, and it always appeared that way to me. I'm too lazy to post it, but you can look up the picture of 2015 1st Rounders with Brittany sitting next to Samantha Logic. Logic is also listed as 5-9, but she looks a lot bigger even while sitting.

Canada is probably no shorter than Faulkner or skinnier than Jefferson. Like those two, she can compensate for lack of size with quickness and aggressiveness. Jordin can blow by you on offense or pick your pocket on defense. Yes, she'll be exploited at times on D, but she can probably find some way to make people pay. I don't see why Canada can't at least be a useful backup who pushes pace and brings energy.
