The ND press release had a stat that was a bit confusing. The way it was worded was rather fuzzy: The Irish have now totaled 287 points through three NCAA Tournament games, the most of any team to reach the Elite Eight.

Did they mean overall or just this year. Well, I did some digging, and the answer is...this year.

It is actually 5th all time, though.

Here are all of the years when a team averaged more than 90 ppg in the first 3 rounds (obviously not including times when it took just 2 wins to get to the Elite Eight):

1. 2017 Baylor: 302 points (100.7 ppg)
2. 2000 UConn: 301 points (100.3 ppg)
3. 2016 UConn: 296 points (98.7 ppg)
2017 UConn: 296 points (98.7 ppg)
5. 2018 ND: 287 points (95.5 ppg)
6. 1996 Tennessee: 286 points (95.3 ppg)
7. 2015 UConn: 285 points (95.0 ppg)
8. 1995 UConn: 283 points (94.3 ppg)
2018 UConn: 283 points (94.3 ppg)
10. 1998 Tennessee: 276 points (92.0 ppg)
11. 2018 Oregon: 272 points (90.6 ppg)
12. 1994 Purdue: 271 points (90.3 ppg)

Yes, two of the above teams are playing today. That (and the fact that neither one is really strong on defense this year) is why everyone is expecting a shootout. Watch, we'll all get a shock and ND-Oregon will be in the 60s... Wink
