Vic’s gang is the obvious favorite but I’m going to pick UCLA for the upset. Here’s what needs to go down:
-Canada dominates both sides of the ball and takes away any advantage of the Mississippi State point guards
-Because MSU has great guard play off the bench, Dean for UCLA needs to provide solid minutes: defense, steals and a three ball or two - esp if Canada needs a mini break
-Billings takes it to McCowan/moves her away from basket and has a 20/10 game with no foul problems
-For UCLA to win, one of Vivians or McCowan needs to have an off night or McCowan sees limited minutes due to foul trouble
-Drummer needs a solid game and handle the boards for Billings - 10/8 kind of performance
-UCLA needs a third scorer. Likely not Drummer. Hayes or another player needs at least 15-16.
Should be a fun game regardless.

UCLA has all the talent, athleticism and ability to win this game. I actually like this match-up maybe the most out of all the 1 seeds for UCLA.
Biggest concern of course if guarding the big girl.
Let's go Bruins! Can't wait for this game.

Keeping McCowen off the O boards will be very very important for UCLA.
Hopefully UCLA can push the ball and get Billings (and other bigs) some open looks, I think McCowen will have a hard time chasing Mo up the floor.

Reffing on the inside could also play a crucial role. Early foul trouble on either McCowan or Billings and could change the flow of the game.

I think this game could be close, or the biggest blowout of the E8. It all depends on how disciplined Canada can play.

Canada has to go right at McCowan and look for fouls. Don't care if she blocks a few, get the body fouls, get her to the bench.

UCLA has to be ready to try to run them out of the gym. No way McCowan can keep up with them running. And no way they can deal with McCowan in the half court. So it should be an interesting chess match and contrast in style.

sorta OT, but I loved the story they told about the Schaefers yesterday - where they almost lost their son.

I expect this game will be close throughout because neither team outclasses the other, talent-wise, unlike in the Lexington massacre.
However, I think MS ST has a coaching advantage. They clearly have the edge in experience.
There's probably a simple barometer- if TM plays her 30 min/game avg, MS ST will likely win.
I look forward to see how Canada is played by Vic and TM by Close, and I wonder how effective William will be. Also, this is probably the best defense UCLA has seen all year, certainly the best since losing to UConn waaaay back before Thanksgiving.
I'll assume the better 3-pt shooting team will win. On the season, that's been MS ST.
Should be a good one.

It's risky to surf too high on the wave of enthusiasm from UCLA's victory over Texas. Soberly analyzed, MSSt has been consistently strong on both offense and defense all season by almost all metrics.
TMac is a galumpher but can be devastating on rebounds, putbacks and other short shots unless she is displaced, bookcased or erased out of the low block position. It will be interesting to see whether the relatively short UCLA has any way of doing that. |

Never been a UCLA rooter, probably a scar from the Wooden era, but after winning the NIT as freshmen this senior class got sent to UConn's region the last 2 years, a virtual death sentence. They have their chance for the FF this year and I hope they make it there.
This is arguably the best team Miss St has faced all season with the possible exception of S Car. And sometimes getting back to the FF for a second time is harder than the first time.

McGowan was a full foot out of bounds when she "saved" the ball. Ref looking right at it. Wtf.

Billings can't guard McCowan. Completely taking her out of her game.

Billings looks 6" shorter than TMac.
Never understood what a "Eurostep" is. I've seriously been watching American ball since the early 50's, and some players were taking big steps and change of direction steps in the paint that entire period. |

I'll repeat- I played HS basketball w/ a kid who used that move often. Talking 1974.

Canada looks almost as itty bitty as Itty Bitty. Both are effective. |

Schaefer was moving into the driver and didn't have her feet planted outside the ard until the shooter was in the air. A bullshit call based on her reputation.
