Mt. Pointe basketball great Powell headed to Hall of Fame

The National Federation of State High School Associations announced Thursday morning that Mountain Pointe great and current Grand Canyon women's basketball coach Nicole Powell is headed to the National High School Hall of Fame.
Powell attended Mountain Pointe from 1996-2000 and is still the state's career leading rebounder and No. 2 all-time career scorer. Her 1,800 career rebounds ranks No. 8 all-time in the NFHS' national record book.
Aside from basketball, Powell won the 5A discus and singles badminton state championships in her senior season. Her discus title and third place in the shot helped Mountain Pointe win the 2000 track and field state team championship.
As a junior, she helped Mountain Pointe's 800 meter relay team place third at state, and she also finished fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discuss. As a sophomore and senior, Powell led Mountain Pointe to state badminton team championships as the team's No. 1 singles player.
When she was a freshman Powell finished second in the state in 5A tennis doubles. |

Powell is in her first season as head coach of the Grand Canyon Antelopes. Her team is 14-13, but 8-5 in the WAC, good for 3rd place in the conference.
