For this league to grow, the WNBA needs more fans to watch the game so that more fans will have someone to talk to about the game. Yes, the new deal with Twitter and the broadcasting deal with ESPN will help. Certainly fans today -- unlike fans in the past -- have many opportunities to discuss the play of such stars as Charles and Delle Donne on-line. But the WNBA would also be helped by more fans could actually go see the legends playing the game today.
Once again, both the NBA and MLB were not that popular after 21 years. When we consider that history, the WNBA is doing quite well today. But restricting attendance today -- a move that might make some sense today -- may not make as much sense when we look towards the future of the WNBA. |

In 2017 the Mystics --led by All-Star Elena Delle Donne -- attracted 7,711 fans per game. But their new arena will only seat 4,200 fans. Had the Mystics played at this new arena in 2017 they would have seen 60,712 fewer fans in 2017 |
I think the Mystics will have to increase actual attendance in order to fill a 4,200 seat arena. But on TV/LiveAccess/Twitter, it should look a lot better no matter if they increase or not.

Plus the Storm will likely be playing at a temporary home for 2019 due to key Arena getting renovated. So much for attendance going up this season or next season.

Maybe they'll change the metric. "The percentage of arenas filled rose this season in the WNBA for the third consecutive year..." |

Attendance will dip below 7,000, but Borders will likely get on her high horse and say arenas are now filling up to capacity. Kind of easy to steer the ship when possibly half the teams will be playing in arenas with capacity under 10,000.

High horse? Her job is to run the league and that includes putting the best face on every situation.

I guess I'm complaining about a Berri article as usual.
These days I am beyond annoyed when people talk about an entire organization as if it were a sentient being or if everyone involved in it agrees on every single thing that anyone else in it does.
In these two cases, it's clearly not the idea of anyone involved in just the WNBA and it's not like anyone on the WNBA side could have stopped it either. The two owners have all the leverage in this situation. Neither even bothered pretending that it would benefit their WNBA teams in any way. |

I totally agree. Going even further, the Chicago move might help them get more fans as it is more central. The upcoming Seattle relocation is unfortunate but temporary and mirrors what the well-drawing Lynx had to go through. To take those few data points and draw that conclusion is really clickbait.
