UConn was down 12-6 to SMU then went on a 43-0 run!

Despite knowing that their team would get hammered 6981 fans came out. 19 short of the 7000 seat capacity.

There are some who prefer a close/exciting game. I would direct them to the ESPN3 replay of Thursday night's overtime battle between #19 Georgia and Alabama. Georgia won 49-43. Their 27 turnovers & 19 fouls were balanced by Alabama's 14-59 shooting (24%). The 2 teams combined to shoot 5-33 from behind the arc (15%) & 29% overall. The combined a/to's was 17/48.
2,100 fans watched this nip and tuck classic in 15,000 seat Coleman Coliseum.

It was senior night at both games.

I generally prefer competitive games. That said I went to see Gabby Williams play her senior home game at Nevada and enjoyed seeing UConn playing what amounted to about 10 minutes of really good basketball and UConn won by 25 in a game they should have won by 50. There were more than 6000 people at the game which will is the most people Nevada has ever drawn by far. On the other hand I saw the last 5 minutes of regulation and the OT of the SEC game. It was awful basketball, but it was still far more compelling than the second half of the UConn-SMU game, so if I had to watch just one I'd choose Georgia-Alabama. To each his own.

Here is a statement from the Stanford web site:

PULLMAN, Wash. – Stanford joins Washington State in mourning the loss of the Cougars' director of strength and conditioning David Lang on Saturday afternoon. Due to his sudden passing, the Cardinal's regular-season finale at Washington State on Sunday has been cancelled.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to David's loved ones, his wife Brigitta and their children," Stanford's Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women's Basketball Tara VanDerveer said. "Everyone associated with women's basketball is part of an extremely close, extended family and receiving this news was absolutely devastating. Washington State may be our opponent at times on the court, but June, her staff and players are our dear friends and have our love and support during this difficult time."

Lang, a member of the WSU Athletics Department for 20 years, worked closely with many of the Cougars' roughly 450 student-athletes and directly with the women's basketball and men's and women's golf programs.

Maine comes back from a 12 point deficit after 3 quarters. Outscores Albany 22-10 in the fourth and 8-3 in OT to win the America East regular season title. Black Bears roar in Orono.

ASU making life hard for OrSU. Of course the brightest version of pink you've ever seen makes me want to wear sunglasses just to watch tv. Maybe it's gamesmanship. Anyway ASU very tough in their own house.

JMU beat Delaware, 67-56, at the Convo Center. The Blue Hens are essentially a one-player (Nicole Enabosi) team and apparently thought the Dukes were too as they managed to shut down Kamiah Smalls in the first half. She came roaring back in the second and scored 13 on them anyway. Meanwhile the rest of the Dukes were busy with their usual balanced attack. The reffing was questionable as usual, with a crew I hadn't seen before who managed to miss things they were staring directly at.

The top 2 teams in the MWC lost some head scratchers last night.
Wyoming lost at last place Air Force 57-47. It was 17-16 AFA at halftime.
UNLV got routed at Nevada 75-55. Rebels were outscored 25-4 in the 2nd quarter.

Boise State now joins them in a 3way tie atop the conference at 13-4. Regular season finales are Friday night with Boise State at Wyoming and Utah State at UNLV.

I was lucky and caught the 4th qtr of the Albany-Maine game Sunday. The teams were tied for first in the America East going into the game.

Maine was down 10 when I tuned in and rallied to take their first lead with a couple mins. left, but needed a 3 on their last possession in regulation and got it to tie the game at 66.

The Black Bears outscored Albany 8-3 in OT.
