I hope this thread isn't considered sexist, and locked.

I'm not offended that only females are included while males are excluded, even though both genders practice the style.

King wrote so many pop hits. Ronstadt had an incredible voice. I saw her at Tanglewood in the mid 70s, pre-bloat. Raitt plays electric guitar, bluesy, so that makes her a favorite. Her Blender Blues is one of the sauciest numbers around. Simon was mostly schlock, imo.

Which leaves Joni...the best of the bunch, overall, imo. When she pulled her own version of "dylan goes electric", she really got me. The Hejira LP is an all-time favorite, w/ Song For Sharon and Black Crow leading the way. I really like her mid-70s LP run of Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira.

1-Joni
2-Bonnie
3-Linda
4-Carole
5-Carly

No Emmylou Harris?
No Laura Nyro?
No Stevie Nicks?
No Joan Baez?
No Judy Collins?
No Joan Armatrading?
No Karla Bonoff?
No Janis Ian?

Linda was my favorite. Even though she wasn't the writer that Carole King and Joni Mitchell were, her voice was so pure and her ability to reimagine other people's works (including Desperado, When Will I Be Loved and I Will Always Love You) so impressive that she is #1.

I also agree with StevenHW that all of the other names could have been here and Judy Collins in particular should have been included.

There are many but I just selected from a chosen few. I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of those names.

I voted for Joni. My favorite songs from Joni's catalogue are:

1. Come in from the Cold
2. Woodstock
3. Big Yellow Taxi

I LOOOOOVE Carly Simon. I'm just so biased when it comes to her. My favorite songs from her catalogue are:

1. You Belong to Me
2. You're So Vain
3. Let the River Run

I don't care how many cover versions there are of "I Can't Make You Love Me", there will never be a version as heartfelt and JUST GREAT as Raitt's version. I also love Love Has No Pride.

I mainly respect Carole for her songwriting.

I didn't come to appreciate Linda Ronstadt later till the 80's and her work with James Ingram and Aaron Neville. She's probably the best vocalist of the bunch.

The greatest artist by far is Joni Mitchell. It's not even close. She wasn't pop. She was pure, art-house folk and her work was as unique as the advent of any other form of musical expression from the last century.

Carole King was fantastic. Fantastic pop and soul songwriter and a great musician with a really wonderful but different sort of voice. But you're talking pop-art vs. Picasso there if you're rating her against Joni Mitchell. Nobody else on those lists quite reach the level of a Carole King IMO in terms of talent or impact. Certainly Linda Ronstadt had one of the great sets of pipes of that or any other era. Lot of great unique women back then.

I miss her. Sad

Such a smooth voice!

I voted for Carole King. I probably don't know enough about Joni Mitchell to fairly judge her against the others. They seem like such different artists to me that I'm not sure that I should have voted.

One of the greatest voices in music history (regardless of genre or gender).

Easily the best voice: Karen Carpenter

Good songs too. It was a shock when she passed, as I was in L.A. at the time.

Agree that Karen Carpenter had the best voice, but minimal song-writing skills and lesser instrumental ability compared to some of the others mentioned here. Her death deprived us of a huge musical talent.
