Ossining H.S. coach Dan Ricci on comparing Saniya Chong, Andra Espinoza-Hunter and current 6-0 junior superstar Aubrey Griffin:

Quote:
“Saniya was the best basketball player, Andra had the best work ethic, and Aubrey has the best athletic ability,” he said. “By far.”

Ezi has an official visit to Uconn set for Senior night. She may also visit UCLA and Oregon at some point.

UConn grad Natalie Butler continues to lead the country in rebounds in her 5th year while raising perennial bilge dweller G. Mason into 4th place in the 14 team A-10. Today Butler scored 23 points and hauled in 24 rebounds in a win over the Bonnies.

here's a highlight tape from Paige Bueckers' Tartan North game vs undefeated Wyzata. Bueckers had 17 points, going 3-3 from three & 6 steals in the first half as the game was essentially over at the half.

In particular, watch the play she makes about :15 in. She gets a steal, swings it behind her back and bounces a no-look pass across the paint to a teammate. You just can't teach instincts like that.

I have watched a couple of their games. She just makes everyone around her better. What she brought to GM was an uncanny ability to see the court and to direct traffic, almost like a point guard. I'm sure her time at UConn, even sitting on the bench, benefited her in that. She must have soaked up Geno's teaching like a sponge. If she ever wants to coach she probably can. When she leaves, GM will probably return to the basement.

This was against a team that beat Beuchers and company earlier. Paige missed a few games with an injury (foot, leg) in January. Happy for her that she is back and looking good.

Bueckers plays for Hopkins, a longtime Minnesota power that has a couple bad losses this year. North Tartan is her club team.

Hopkins will likely meet unbeaten and No. 24 in the nation Eastview in the Minnesota postseason. In the first meeting, Eastview won by eight.

Her problems at UConn were two-fold. She didn't have strong enough hands and had a lot of balls knocked out and she couldn't handle the speed at which they played. But she ran the court well, was a decent passer and teams had to respect her midrange shot. I'm sure the pace of play at GM seems like slow motion and while she was big at the top of D1 she must seem Brobdingnagian against A10 teams.

Three UConn players are in the respective top fives for the NBHOF positional awards.

- Kia Nurse for the Nancy Lieberman PG Award, along with Lexie Brown, Katelynn Flaherty, Kelsey Mitchell and Sabrina Ionescu.

- Gabby Williams for the Cheryl Miller SF award, along with Shakayla Thomas, Sophie Cunningham, Jamie Nared and Teana Muldrow.

- Katie Lou Samuelson for the Ann Meyers Drysdale SG Award, along with Asia Durr, Arika Ogunbowale, Victoria Vivians and Kitija Laksa.

While I am very resistant to using positional names or numbers, if I have to I'd say that none of these UConn nominees plays the positions for which they are nominated. Primarily on UConn, Nurse is the SG, Williams is the PF and Samuelson is the SF.

I don't think the voters will agree on all, but as of now I'd select Ionescu, Cunningham and Samuelson in their artificial categories.

All three UConn players are still nominees for the NBHOF's overall Wooden POY Award, along with Napheesa Collier.

Glenn, one minor gripe. YOU, of all people, with your knowledge, out to be able to spell JAIME Nared's name correctly.

Thank you.

Is Lexie Brown the only true PG here?

I'd say they're all combo guards.

I haven't noticed Ezi Magbegor making a college announcement, but there's this line in the Sydney Morning Herald last week:

"The Capitals are still coming to grips with the departures of teenage superstar Eziyoda Magbegor (University of Connecticut) . . . . "

The same article appears in the Canberra Times, where the reporter, Caden Helmers, presumably covers the Canberra Capitals, Magbegor's team.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/sport/act-sport/wnbl-canberra-capitals-forward-kate-gaze-signs-with-adelaide-lightning-20180313-h0xeo7.html

Helmers reported two weeks ago in the Canberra Times that Magbegor was leaving Australia for the U.S., but didn't in that article identify whether the college would be UCLA or UConn.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/sport/act-sport/canberra-capitals-rookie-ezi-magbegor-commonwealth-gamesbound-but-leaving-wnbl-20180306-h0x4ie.html

If Helmers has sources within the Capitals, one might reasonably conclude that his parenthetical identification of UConn was informed and intentional. But so many things are so wrong in so much media these days that it may just have been a so-so solecism.

A little late realizing this, but Christyn Williams has been awarded both the Gatorade National POY and the McDonald's Morgan Wooten POY.

Williams, who averaged 26.8 points and 10.4 rebounds as a senior, is the second straight UConn recruit to win the Gatorade award, following Husky freshman Megan Walker. Other current and former Huskies to win the award include Katie Lou Samuelson (2015), Breanna Stewart (2012), Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (2011), Maya Moore (2007) and Tina Charles (2006).

Last year's winner of the Wooten was Evina Westbrook, a freshman at Tennessee. Previous UConn recruits to win the award include Crystal Dangerfield (2016), Katie Lou Samuelson, (2015) Breanna Stewart (2012) and Maya Moore (2007).

More catching up.

Of the 13 Region 3 players selected as WBCA All-American nominees, five are from UConn: KLS, Collier, Williams, Nurse and Stevens. The 10-player WBCA All-American team will be selected from the regional nominees.

KLS and Williams are two of the four finalists for the Naismith POY, along with A'ja Wilson and Asia Durr.

KLS is also one of the four finalists for the Wade Trophy, along with A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Mitchell and Sabrina Ionescu.

Oliva Nelson-Ododa was the only girl in the McDonald's Powerade dunk contest and she came in third. Her first dunk was the cleanest by a girl I recall in the contest and it got a perfect score.

Report on and impressions of Christyn Williams and Olivia Nelson-Ododa in the McD AA game.

Williams, a 5-foot-11 guard from Little Rock, Ark., scored 22 points with 12 rebounds – both game highs – for the victorious West team. Her scoring total, on 9-for-16 shooting (4-for-5 from 3-point range), tied for the third highest total in the 17-year history of the girls All-American game. She also had four assists. She likely won the MVP award, but ESPN cut away before the awards.

I thought Williams exhibited confidence, maturity, great touch, smooth execution, and aggressive rebounding from the guard position. I expect her to step into Nurse's starting spot from her first UConn game, and be able to play the 2 or 1. She'll be a star and college AA.

ONO, from Winder-Barrow High in Georgia, scored eight points with eight rebounds (the latter, the East team's high) in 22 minutes. Her execution level is further away from her potential than Williams'. She made some nice layups, but often made impetuous choices by turning into, dribbling into, or shooting into obvious defensive pressure -- thereby turning the ball over excessively. She also appeared a bit physically weak with (maybe?) some suspect hands. These things are all improvable.

In this game, the post player who impressed me the most was Queen Egbo, a Baylor commit. For the nth time I've watched her, Charli Collier didn't impress me (n>5).

I'll look for a box score.
