PostPosted: 02/13/18 2:59 pm    ::: Question about 50 Shades of Grey movies Reply Reply with quote

Are these actually worth watching?

Never struck me as something that would interest me, but it seems to have become such a popular culture phenomenon that I'm thinking I should see them. (And would my wife enjoy them or look at me like I'd lost my mind?)

What prompted my question is that Amazon has a set of the movie and sequel in BluRay for about $12 today.

I did find amusing that, in parallel marketing strategy with all the lines of toys that accompany Disney, Star Wars, Ninja Turtle and Lego movies, I read that there is actually a line of 50 Shades of Grey sex toys and lubes. Shocked Very Happy

Now is my chance to be like one of those idiots answering a product question on Amazon:

"I don't know because I've never seen one, but I've been thinking about it."

The books read as bad fan fiction of an already terrible written series. Of course, that is what they literally were.

Can't speak to if the movies were any better.

Don't do it. Don't. Just don't. For the love of all that is sweet and holy, run away.

I never read of any of the books or seen the movie adaptions. I have no interest in them.

But having said that, I figure that if you wanted to see a movie about a BDSM relationship, then you might be better off with The Story of O (1975). Rolling Eyes

I never read the book but was mildly curious to see the first movie when it came out just because sex, but everyone I know who saw it trashed it very hard so I never bothered. But if you're the type of person who enjoys bad movies for a laugh then maybe it could work.

Yeah, no one has trashed the movie/books more than the BDSM community as it fucks up the power dynamics royally.

I've seen the name on the various pirate sites that show movies free, never watched them, but nevertheless have no qualms about recommending against them as exploitative trash just based on Dunninger intuition.

Save your $12 for a cup of Starbucks rancid coffee, and instead you can watch the first ever porn film here, made in 1896, about the time Senda Berenson was introducing basketball at Smith College.

I find the reaction that these movies are unpopular trash to be a bit strange considering the first two in the serious have made a BILLION dollars at the box office and the third in the series was by far the #1 movie at the box office this past week.

Somebody must like them.

Enough to buy tickets for the sequels.

I was not under the impression these were fringe semi-porn comparable to what I think the Story of O is ( having never seen it). I was under the impression these were more serious movies.

I saw the first one. It was idiotic and that’s being kind. Let me just say, it was all hype and delivered nothing but me being able to catch up on my sleep in the darkened movie theater.

Porn is one of the largest industries in the world with revenue in the hundreds of billions. So popularity basically has nothing to do with quality. Think about how popular the Twilight books/movies were even though they were terribly written books by most any standard.

Would you call these movies "porn"?

I thought these were a pretty far cry from qualifying for that characterization.

But then I haven't seen them.

The books were/are commonly referred to as "mommy porn". The movies only did what they did in sales because the books were such a pop-cultural phenomenon.

I don't see how that explains the success of the sequels. If the first movie sucked that badly, the second and third wouldn't be hitting box office home runs.

The Transformers series blew that theory out of the water years ago

Is it a surprise to you that bad movies sometimes make a lot of money?

I rescind.

Art, please spend the few buck and hours to watch the movies, and then give us a knowledgeable review.

I think it was a terrible movie. It seems the attraction of the movie is as a sort of guilty pleasure and a kind of taboo movie made not quite so taboo. It certainly fails as porn but it also fails as a movie from an acting, plot or character perspective. I didn't see The Story of O, but if the interest is in seeing a movie involving some degree of BDSM I would point to either 9 1/2 Weeks (1986) with Mickey Rourke or Secretary (2002) with Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Both were interesting movies that can be enjoyed as film even if the subject matter can be offputting. (I believe Secretary was the better of the two.)

If you are absolutely determined to see 50 Shades, I would suggest you just rent one as I am rather sure that will be enough.

Also the number of times I have watched Showgirls. I mean the first time was because I was a horny 16 year old who wanted to see Jessie Spano nekkid, but after that it just became fun to watch and laugh at its awfulness. 50 Shades would probably be a fun movie to MST3k, but if someone is looking to watch something in earnest, it is a movie I would personally avoid.

Ultimately though, Glenn is right. We can only give you our opinions on it. It's only a couple hours long, so if you're interested in it, or even just curious about it, by all means watch it and form your own. And if you do, post again and let us know what you thought of it.

It is BDS&M for the midwestern housewives set, with a sprinkling of Harlequin romance, and a bad Nicolas Sparks novel, with the writing and acting level of a Lifetime movie with a title like "Bad Step Mother" or a Hallmark Channel Christmas movie called something like "The Widower's Wonderful Whimsical Windows" and the slick production values of a late 90s hip-hop video from an over exposed artist with lots of shots of expensive boats, cars, clothes, sunglasses, popping bottles, and exotic locations.

It is to BDS&M what The Twilight Saga is to Vampires.

TBH I haven't seen it, just guessing based on the commercials.

Please bear in mind, given the number of Twilight comparisons, the point that justintyme brought up earlier: the 50 Shades series started as fanfic of Twilight, before the author realized that if she changed enough of the details, she could sell it as original work. The rest is history.

(Those of us who write fanfic for... other things... are often tempted to yell "YOU'RE NOT HELPING!" at the whole thing.)

Remember now, just about every ultra-hyped film is #1....for a week. It's what happens in weeks 2-3 that matter. First week everyone runs out and sees it. If it sucks, they tell their friends to go see it anyway because maybe they'll like it....some trash it. Weeks 2 and 3 is when it either continues to do well or gets pulled from theaters.

I haven't seen any of them or read the books....just not that interested in a film that, if the dude wasn't a rich guy, would be an episode of CSI.

I'll admit to reading the books and watching the first two movies.

The books were a bad caricature of BDSM. They combined the BDSM elements with bland characters having improbable backgrounds, a sappy love story, more improbable events, a convoluted crime, and a lackluster ending. They drew a lot of criticism from both the BDSM people and the domestic violence activists, not to mention anyone that would just enjoy a good book. However, the writing is so shallow that it's not a huge time investment to read all three books.

The movies throw some bad acting into the mix and strip out most of the BDSM scenes, probably to achieve an R rather than NC-17. I have no idea why Marcia Gay Harden lowered herself to this abomination. Besides the BDSM theme, the movie plays heavily on the wealth of the billionaire main character (sports car, wardrobe, servants, formal balls, etc). Rotten Tomatoes gave the first movie a rating of 25% and the next two far worse, saying "Fifty Shades Freed brings its titillating trilogy to a clumsy conclusion, making for a film franchise that adds up to a distinctly dissatisfying ménage à trois."

There's an amusing parody trilogy called Fifty Sheds of Grey with some good garden photos, or if you like to cook, I would recommend Fifty Shades of Chicken or even Fifty Shades of Bacon as better reading. And any 3 movies randomly selected from Netflix or Amazon Video are likely to be an improvement over the FSoG movies.

Can you elaborate a little? I think what you wrote is interesting, but I don't think I u derstand what you said or meant.

A little expansion would help. Thanks.
