Wow, really truly absolutely all? Is FIBA Europe forcing them? It's just that GB Basketball generally don't bother with helpful stuff like that which would require a tiny amount of effort and organisation.
(and I've been dithering for weeks about whether I could be bothered to go up to Manchester (and fork out for an overnight stay) just to see one game) |

Eventually, I enjoyed that .
Israel choosing not to foul, down 3 with five seconds left in OT, seemed a bizarre decision. Sometimes you can take the possibility of points difference eventually being relevant too seriously. |

Yeah i was screaming at my laptop screen/Clark: FOUL DAMMIT. But it looked like a deliberiate call from the coach not to foul. Very strange.. |
Yeah, I can only think that he decided the chances of fouling, GB missing both free throws, and Israel then managing to hit yet another three, were so slim that he'd rather just lose by 3 rather than 4 or 5. He may well also have been out of timeouts, which would make the tying three even less likely.
But I still think you have to maintain that slim chance of winning, for the potential cost of only two points. If it means you eventually have to win a different game by 5 instead of 3 (or 23 instead of 21, or whatever) then so be it.
It was a ridiculous win for GB, and generally speaking we won't hit that many 3s to stay in games. The defensive rotations have to be better or we just won't be competitive. Overtime or not there's no way in hell we score 90 points on a regular basis.
And dear god, there has to be a way to initiate a halfcourt set that doesn't involve the wing running a baseline cut then coming up the sideline looking for a pass from the point guard. We ran it a gazillion times, and whenever Clark was covering the wing it became a turnover or near-turnover because she just jumped it. Staggeringly predictable. But regardless, we're 1-0 in a group where you only play six games. That's a good start. |

Second round of games are all tomorrow (Wednesday) if anyone's interested, viewable via the same links above. Greece-GB should be at 10am US Eastern, if I've done the maths right, and then there's 15 more games over the rest of the day. |

Richyyy, I don't have a personal Twitter account so I was going to talk about something you said here. I don't think it's any more fair from a fan perspective to consider Alysha Clark a naturalized player than it is to consider Leilani Mitchell one. Both were entitled to claim citizenship at birth, but just did not do so in time. Oddly enough, I thought Dannielle Diamant was in the same boat as Clark, but they both played together in these games so I guess not. |

Fair enough; I didn't realise she was one of the more reasonable naturalisations. I'm only jealous, anyway. Unless Savannah Wilkinson blows up at Florida State the GB youth (besides Fagbenle) coming through looks really thin at the moment. That core, which is mostly the same as the group that got us to London 2012, is gonna age out and fade away pretty soon - and I'm not sure if anything much is going to be left behind. We could use a nice American ringer .
ETA: At present, I don't think we're even using any kind of naturalised spot. Every rotation player in the current squad played with Natalie Stafford when she filled it, so presumably none of them count. So any decent female basketball players with some vaguely recent British heritage, give us a call... |

Katie Lou is probably out due to the trickery of dealing with someone who has played at youth level for another country, but surely they can give Karlie Samuelson a call? Since she seems to be committed to an overseas career for this season at least, you would think that the possibility of it helping her earn money in the future would be enticing.
Mothers, don't let your young basketball-playing children reach age 16 without acquiring any nationality they are eligible to take... |

Is the passport as useful when it's a non-EU country? I don't know whether most of the leagues and the EuroLeague/EuroCup limit non-EU or just generally non-European players. We're obviously about to be outside the EU pretty soon.
It was Bonnie Samuelson who was briefly named in a GB squad way back when, but any of them would add to the squad at this point. It's been so long now that I assume they either have no interest or there's some issue with making them eligible. |

For every league I am aware of, it is any country in FIBA Europe and that is the case for EuroLeague and EuroCup too. That's why a passport from some of the countries that no longer compete regularly, like Azerbaijan and Armenia are so helpful. |

Thanks, that makes sense. Good thing too, for the Brits trying to make a iiving playing overseas. |

Well, you got your Karlie, even though playing in qualifiers seems more difficult as a college assistant than as a club player in Europe.
The advice still applies apparently as not getting your children all their eligible nationalities by age 16 is irresponsible and can make things difficult later. |

Yeah, when I checked her Twitter bio to see what she was doing now and saw she was hired as a college assistant, I did wonder how that's going to work. I presume she's at least going to be available in February, or they wouldn't have named her in the current squad. After that I guess we'll see. Can't hurt to get her involved and see how things work out. |

A recap of the day's games:

There are some interesting storylines. Slovenia upset France. Greece lost, but had Jacki Gemelos, which could be a big deal for the Worlds. I have no idea what the longest time Karlie Samuelson has ever gone without a field goal attempt is, but she probably broke her record by some margin. More people are joining the Raisa Musina hype train, but there's still plenty of room for Olaf Lange. |

Yeah, I dunno what was with Samuelson. There were at least a couple of occasions where I wondered "isn't the whole point of you to take shots like that?" And virtually everyone else was jacking threes around her. In general, we were awfully fortunate that Portugal are pretty poor. We were rubbish most of the night, and somehow came away with a win. Israel aren't great either, but they'll stuff us if we play like that in the next game.
Today was the first time I watched a game specifically to pay attention to Musina (and Vadeeva, but I've seen plenty of her before). She's certainly not the finished article (especially defensively), but 19 years old, mobile, some ball skills, range to beyond the arc, and a legit 6-3 - there's plenty to like. I'd happily take her in the third round rather than some US kid you're gonna cut a week later. Maybe even the second. |

As always, though, drafting a player who never shows up isn't good for much, and it's very hard to tell, it seems, which Euros are interested in playing in the WNBA.

Drafting Americans who are gone in a week ain't good for much either. |
