It's also 17 dates for that arena that otherwise would have been dark ...

I do think that sports fans will show up, especially if the tickets are free or heavily discounted, which is likely.

Yeah why not, they could get some in the door that could be converts. Go to Vegas, gamble, lay out or prob on the pool to keep cool and if the mood grabs you, get married all in one weekend. Always cheap flights to Vegas.

MGM is the buyer, which is why I linked Hoopfeed's tweet.

what I also couldn't say is they are playing at Mandalay Bay Arena

I think this could be a really big, positive deal for the W.

Same here. I am REALLY excited about the potential

And if you give away a pair of tickets with every third pull on a fruit machine, you get to claim them as tickets 'distributed'. 12,000 attendance per game, here we come!

Any word on what the fate of Becky Hammon's retired number? Does it stay in San Antonio? Does it move to Vegas? Does it get put into a box never to be seen again? All of the above? None of the above?

Most people go to Las Vegas to gamble in the casinos, take in the night club entertainment, attend major boxing/UFC matches or get married/divorced. Besides the locals, I don't really see many visitors to Las Vegas attending a WNBA game, unless it's people like us who happen to be visiting Las Vegas or people who have lost all their money and given free tickets.

However, MGM can afford the loss in revenues although, so could have the San Antonio group.

Just saying...

I think it will attract tourists though. My sister took a roadtrip through some big cities in America and went to a Sparks game when she was in Los Angeles. She also went to Vegas and im pretty sure she would of gone to a game there aswell if they had a team. Same for me.

Especially if they market it as something to do with your family. So many people go their with their kids and then search for things that are all-ages fun. Give away free tickets for "family fun time" and it could really draw.

Anyone know if the Vegas tourism is seasonal at all? Or is it full blast 24/7 365 a year?

Other than a couple of slow weeks around Christmas, there's very little variation in the amount of tourism Vegas gets during the year.

It certainly can't hurt to try this approach. The Sun have a model that appears very sustainable, if not overly profitable. The scorching temps in Vegas in summer do drive people inside, much like in Phoenix. I have never been to Vegas so can't comment too much but I wonder how much stuff there is for a family to do there? Or if a lot of families take vacations there at all, as opposed to people going there just for casino play. I do think it is disturbing to see an NBA team cut links with its WNBA franchise though.

Yes no and yes.

One thing that you see in CT is they don't WANT the bball families...but are of course happy to welcome them...their target demo is more 50+ Retired folk with ties to college basketball and sports

WHY...because there is a secondary revenue stream from those fans...or in English...they come before the games and stay after the games and gamble.

So YES they lay on thick the casino comps...and sadly there have been times where the guys next to us were just some out of luck gambler taking a breather between sessions at the craps table (Some very much on the wrong side of the Bum line...PU)

Cox has cut back on these comps and has been reaching out into the community more...(You gotta have some creds now to get the comps used to be we just came for the games and got free tickets...we'll see if that continues next year or the free love will return) But the main plan is draw in people who will make a night out of it, eat at their restaurants and play their games.

But the model works...the big thing is the schedule...CT's schedule is unlike most teams...they want the midweek later in the day games...and Saturday night games and mid afternoon sunday. Again give the folks time to spend their money at the tables...then go to the game and then hopefully eat at their restaurants.

Here's where I'm unsure about it for Vegas.

there is no natural tie to WBB...or any sports really...UNLV has a so so mid major program at best...except for maybe taking the points on a redonklious UConn spread not much action at the books for WBB...and as I pointed out the HS GBB community is gutted by games that turn into the globetrotters thanks to a well intended but poorly written anti blowout rule.

CT is CT so the Tribe had one to grow on there. And they grew and I agree IMHO are a bigger cornerstone of the league than the NBA owners at times. The Tribe have done nothing but good things to grow this league.

MGM has money...and a ton of it...and anchoring down with Bill is a good sign of dedication to the club. But be clear, they're starting with a team that is at LEAST 2 years away from meaningful contention...maybe they get lucky with Wilson and steal 8th but anything that would give a home playoff game...nope.

So they're going to have to rely on just being a free 2 hour entertainment break from heavy gambling...not winning...not roots in the community.

We'll see....as I said it does work in CT...but a bad team in a market with no natural WBB roots...I agree with Richyy Mystical crowds could be an early norm...

The model is a good one... and vegas has a ton of shows that go off the idea of being a breather between gambling sessions etc we'll just see if it can hold up in such a saturated entertainment market

I wish them well...just still alarmed that SSE gave up on the league...given how many other minor league attractions they run still etc

High school girls' basketball in Las Vegas is actually pretty good ... despite the goofy rule put in to rein in Centennial, one of the best teams in the country.

But first, Centennial and Bishop Gorman are both strong teams, and there are other solid teams in the area. In addition, there is at least one, and maybe several, major girls' basketball tournament held in Vegas during the summer. Presumably, the new owners will connect with the organizers, and the league will try to schedule a Las Vegas home game during that event -- and other events.

So in terms of girls' basketball, Las Vegas is a much better location than Chicago or Connecticut, say, or even San Antonio.

Now for the goofy rule. Because Centennial was blowing people out, and was an African-American pressing team with a high-energy coach, Nevada put in a rule that if a team wins by 50 or more, the coach must file a report on why the blowout happened, and I think the AD or principal must get involved.

So what Karen Weitz, the Centennial coach, does is get ahead by 48 and then just tell her kids not to score any more. This can happen early in the second half, and I can't remember exactly how she handles it -- either they don't shoot at all, or when they get the ball, they give it back to the other team.

It's a really dumb rule to protect the suburban girls from losing by a big number.

The Spurs under their former ownership were very dedicated to the Stars. Even hosting the ASG in 2011 when it was always forced upon either Connecticut or New York from 2003-2010. In a perfect world, the WNBA would be going into the 2018 season with 18 teams(possibly 20) with Las Vegas & San Francisco given expansion franchises. All previous successful franchises would have found new ownership(Houston, Sacramento, Portland & Cleveland). Maybe the Shock stick around in Detroit and the Sting actually relocated to Kansas City, too. We'd likely have:

EAST
Connecticut Sun
New York Liberty
Washington Mystics
Cleveland Rockers
Atlanta Dream

CENTRAL
Chicago Sky
Indiana Fever
Detroit Shock
Kansas City Sting(relocation from Charlotte in 2007)
Minnesota Lynx

MIDWEST
San Antonio Stars
Houston Comets
Dallas Wings(expansion team in 2016)
Phoenix Mercury
Las Vegas Pride(expansion team in 2018)

PACIFIC
Seattle Storm
Portland Fire
Sacramento Monarchs
Los Angeles Sparks
Golden State WNBA(expansion team in 2018)

The Midwest normally refers to a northern tier of states. Maybe rename your Central to Midwest and your Midwest can be called South Central... and it'd also give it a cool hip hop edge.

Divisions are basically meaningless in the NBA, so we don't need divisions in the WNBA. Smile

Will there be a farewell sendoff party for the San Antonio Stars fans, just like the old Utah Starzz did before they moved to San Antonio?

Unfortunately, the timing of SS&E meant that most of the players are overseas now. I also get the impression that they had not been very thoughtful towards the fans for the past couple of seasons so I have a hard time believing they will be now.

Yes, I guess you are correct, sadly. Sad

But I still believe that a farewell of sorts --- even with most of the players are overseas --- that a meeting could've been held for the fans, season-ticket holders, and the team front-office employees to bring some sense of closure.

After the Sacramento Monarchs folded after the 2009 season, I know there was a meeting for their season-ticket holders. The Maloof family (the owners) didn't attend, but Danette Leighton of their front office was there and served as the spokesperson. Most of the then-current players were not there, but former player Ruthie Bolton was there.

I didn't attend that meeting, but here is recap of that event:
http://boards.rebkell.net/viewtopic.php?t=54141

And here is an article from 2002, about the Utah Starzz' farewell to the fans, with some of the players present.

I gotta talk to my friend Loretta tomorrow. She moved from Salt Lake City to San Antonio the last time the franchise moved. Dunno how she'll feel about Vegas.

I did want to come back to this. Sadly, Loretta and her partner are not moving to Vegas. Apparently dropping everything and moving hundreds of miles at a moment's notice is easier as a 25-year-old single person working retail than as a 40-year-old in a long term relationship with an established job. Who knew? They are going to root for the Aces, however.
