As reported by FourFourTwo, the Boston Breakers have folded. Sad day for women's football, but the team was run into the ground and the front office couldn't market themselves out of a wet paper bag.

The league still needs a commissioner (I would love to do it) and teams that are struggling on the business side of things (Sky Blue, Chicago, Seattle) are living on borrowed time.

If you live in a NWSL city or can get to one easily, GO TO GAMES!! Take folks with you to games.

I still hold out hope for the league to prosper.

Does women's soccer know what its core market is? That always seems to have been a problem with pro leagues in the US. I'll leave the horror stories to Happycappie, who was a Philadelphia Charge season ticket holder and has oodles of 'em.

But it seems like they're pushing more and more into the suburbs. Going to a Sky Blue game would be an expedition for anyone in NYC except maybe Staten Islanders. From where I am, for example, it's about two hours by car (assuming the usual ill fortune on the road) or three hours by mass transit. Their predecessors haven't been much closer (not to mention the Power was a giant dumpster fire of a shitshow from everything I've heard. If I'm going to go that far, I might as well go to Mohegan for a Sun game.

But so much of it seems to come down to the existence of the question, "Who is women's soccer *for*?" And it probably shouldn't. But it seems to have been decided in the halls of power that women's soccer is something for little girls to aspire to, not actually something that fans might want to watch, almost to the point of "how dare fans get their reality all over these little girls' dreams?"

It's probably different in different markets. Seattle seems to have somewhat figured it out. Crossing over with the Storm, in more ways than one, has probably helped.

The league does seem to be surviving solely on it's MLS owned teams(Portland, Houston, Orlando & Salt Lake). Unless Seattle links up with the Sounders, they're likely done after 2018. Reports are surfacing that Chicago is done, too. I'd say either the RedBulls or NYCFC buys Sky Blue. All very odd since the released the schedule. still talk of LAFC, Minnesota United & the new Nashville MLS expansion team interested in NWSL. Maybe Atlanta with its success might pursue a team? Hopefully the NWSL can link up with as many MLS as possible, otherwise the future looks bleak for them. If they can get 8 MLS teams by 2020 owning NWSL teams, they'll be solid.

Portland
Orlando
Houston
Salt Lake
LAFC
Minnesota
SkyBlue(owned by NYCFC)
Nashville
Washington?
Atlanta?

Women's soccer and women's pro sports in general don't seem to have a clue. They seem to only be after "families" and not really fans of their sport. Cities like Boston, Chicago and Seattle shouldn't have a problem getting 120,000 people to the games (12 games 10K per game) The cities are just too big. Even the NWSL cities that are are tied to MLS teams can't do this---Portland notwithstanding.

It's like they don't WANT to be successful, like the owners are in it just for the tax write-off. It drives me bonkers that large cities have teams that just don't give a shit to market themselves to their city. WNBA, NWSL, WNHL...they all tend to suck big ones when it comes to getting folks in the seats. It really isn't rocket science. For the WNBA and NWSL, 10K and game shouldn't be the goal but the minimum they should be at. It's pathetic and inexcusable not to be there.

Not so fast in killing off Boston. There's apparently a group stepping in trying to buy the Breakers in time for the 2018 season.

This would be AWESOME!!! They are going to lose a ton of cash this season, so here's hoping this group, if it pans out, can sustain until 2019 and then get into a real stadium and actually do some real marketing of the team.

DOH---it's official, the Breakers are dead. League site posted it. The league will run with 9 teams, 24 game schedule, everyone plays everyone 3 times.

Dispersal draft is 4pm ET Tuesday, January 30. Sad

Players may opt out of the draft no later than Noon ET, Monday January 29 to pursue jobs outside the NWSL. Teams can trade their picks in the draft after a weighted draw to set the draft order. Teams will have until 1pm ET January 30. After that time, the draft order will be set.

Roster sizes aren't changing (NOT COOL) 18 min and 20 max roster size....good number of players are going to be out of a job after Tuesday.

Those not drafted are immediately discovery eligible.

Okay, this is good--from FourFourTwo in regards to roster sizes:

Each team may carry up to four players who came from Boston. Those players will not count against the team’s salary cap nor its maximum roster size. This only counts for Boston players coming through the dispersal draft. So, the only way a team can carry 24 players is if four of them come through this draft. If that team releases one of those players, that number goes to 23 – it can’t be used to expand roster sizes for players outside of this process. Housing and auto expenses also will not count against the team’s (mysterious) “Permitted Team Assistance Cap.”

yeah, that last minute new ownership had about a .1% chance of happening. The league needs to hope these MLS groups come through. Sounders need to purchase the Reign. The RedBulls need to buy SkyBlue. North Carolina, Chicago & Washington can probably remain as the only non-MLS owned teams. Maybe Barcelona gets their team in the Bay Area for 2019, LAFC & Minnesota add in for 2020. Hopefully the league can get it's act together with MLS and get to 12 teams by 2020(*MLS owned).

Portland*
Orlando*
Houston*
Utah*
LAFC*
Minnesota*
SkyBlue*(owned by NYCFC)
Seattle*
Bay Area Barcelona
Washington
Chicago
North Carolina

Two trades before the draft:

Sky Blue trades the #1 pick to Washington (Lavelle to the Spirit is now likely).

Washington moves from #2 to #1
Sky Blue moves from #1 to #2
Sky Blue also gets a conditional 1st round pick and a natural second round pick from Washington in the 2019 draft.

Orlando traded picks #8 and #11 to Seattle for Seattle's 2019 natural first round pick.

The dispersal draft order is set. The draft will be a serpentine draft, meaning the team that picks last in round 1, picks 1st in round 2, etc.

Draft is over when all teams pass. Once a team passes, their participation in the draft is over.
