This is completely hypothetical, but I'm curious as to whom YOU (not Notre Dame) would pick if Muffet retired at the end of this season. We've had speculations about other coaches' successors, but not so much about Muffet.

Notre Dame has three long time assistant coaches in Carol Owens, Niele Ivey and Beth Cunningham. Also, it is a prestigious program, so assume they could attract the head coaches named above or anyone else you prefer.

How would Staley's foul mouth fit at Notre Dame?

I thought about excluding him and otherwise limiting the choices, but didn't.

That might preclude the Geno choice, too, but there is always the sacrament of reconciliation.

Holly Warlick. They'd get a deal on her, no doubt.

a) I love Megan, but she's only in her first year as a HC, and Mr. McGrady's question was "at the end of THIS season". I think she needs more time.

b) no, don't let Notre Dame do one of the, like, three things that would make me like them

Pure outsider speculation, but wouldn't the heir apparent be Beth Morgan? A native Indiana kid, led Notre Dame to its first FF and has HC coaching experience? (albeit mid-major with some success)

Would imagine Muffet also has a say in picking her successor...

But Ivey and Duffy are also interesting and valid choices.

Owens might be ahead of Cunningham, but both of them were head coaches before and I'm not sure either if them wants that again.

I think you have to consider McGuff and Tsipis. A few years ago I would have thought Coquese Washington was a near lock, but given how that program has tanked I doubt it now.

Mulkey's not going anywhere and I doubt Staley would ever make it onto ND's list.

I doubt if the likely choice is even on the above list, with the possible exception of Ivey.

But you might have to consider some people like Katie Meier, Kelly Graves, I'm sure there's others if I thought about it for a little while.

I'd try to find someone who grew up in the Philadelphia area, started coaching there and who mentored for a couple of years under one of the top coaches.

Of course if GA or MM of the 80's were around today they's have no shot at the jobs at either of their schools.

I actually voted for her based on this. I think one of the reasons she decided to take the ND assistant job from a head coaching job was to get the "big program" experience.

I didn't choose Ivey because she hasn't been a head coach before.

A few years down the road, it wouldn't surprise me to see Duffy on the list.

If you wanted to go outside the "ND Family" (although why would you need to? McGraw's coaching tree is pretty strong), I'd think Barnes Arico would be a good choice.

BTW, if it wasn't for Kevin McGuff, ND would have had to have made this decision back in 2001.

Warlick should serve as a cautionary tale for those who insist an alum is the best choice. She's one of the most successful alumnus coaches.

ND Football had that problem a while back.

ND's alumni coaching stretch started with Rockne (greatest coach), but when he died in a plane crash, they went with one of his assistants (who was an alumnus), but that was a poor choice and he was fired after 3 years.

Then they went with one of the Four Horsemen (Layden) and he did pretty well, but not great, so they replaced him with Rockne protege Frank Leahy, who ended up being an excellent choice for coach.

However, after him, they fell into the "we have to go with a ND man!" trap. ND selected a very young Terry Brennan and after that made the mistake of looking to the pros with Kuharich (only coach with a losing record at ND).

They finally threw out the "ND alumnus coach" idea and went with Parseghian in 1964. ND has had only one alumnus as coach since then (who didn't actually play Football at ND. He was just a student there).
