Georgia wins at Texas A&M

Georgia deserves to be ranked. They have only 2 losses, to Texas and Mississippi St., yet they have fewer votes in the coaches poll than either Virginia or Georgia Tech, both teams they beat.

Neither Va nor GT is ranked in either poll. So I'll go along with Ga. deserving more votes than those two but not that they deserve to be ranked based on that. However Massey has Ga at No 16 but if we value that then we have to see that Massey also has Oregon St at 27 and Cal at 32. Maybe Ga should replace Cal in the rankings? Wink

UGA was expected to improve, and they are.

Meanwhile, I’m watching Miss. State take Alabama apart. With a couple of minutes left in the 4th Q it’s 75-58. I guess Alabama has improved. Last year it might have been 85-38.

To some extent, yes. I was expecting a better record and to compete for a NCAA bid. However, before today, every good team Georgia played, beat them handily. The schedule has been pretty weak. The best win before today was at UVA.

Replace Cal no, Ahead of Cal yes. Georgia has been on my radar for a few weeks. Until today they didn't have a signature win so it was hard to slot the team. But now, with a top 20 win on the road and nothing worse than a top 15 loss they deserve to be ranked. Cal's resume is not as good because their best win is against USC.

But here are two teams to replace:

South Florida - Best win St Johns, losses to Oklahoma and Michigan St
Rutgers - Best win Michigan St, losses to Purdue and Washington St

FlaSta wins again hugely over VaTech. And once again they go deep into their bench getting 6 players into Double digit scoring. Sue loses a significant amount to graduation this year (Shak, Wright and White) but she has some great underclassmen contributing right now - AMA Degbeon, Nausia Woolfolk and Nicole EkHoMu and then you add in next years frosh class esp. Isabel Nicoletti, and Valencia Myer, plus whoever Semrau seems to conjure up out of the transfer pipeline (ala acquisition AJ Alix) and FlaSta looks to be sitting pretty.

The Miss. State-Alabama game ended rather horribly when Alabama's Ashley Williams collided with a MSU player and went down HARD. She lay motionless on the floor for what seemed like an eternity before finally wiggling her fingers. It was deathly quiet in the arena while they waited for the paramedics to come out. She was rolled onto a stretcher with a cervical collar on, but she was able to give a thumb-up as she was taken out. They replayed the collision but I wasn't able to see exactly how they hit, whether they banged heads or she hit the other girl's shoulder. Definite concussion protocol, though. This happened with about a minute left.

And in other news, William & Mary beat Elon yesterday, 81-75, which gives JMU a better hold on first place in the CAA.

Brooklyn in the house! LIU found their mojo and held off Mount St. Mary's 53-48, thanks to a double-double from DeAngelique Waithe and clutch guard play off the bench.

Their best player was out with a knee injury.

On the other hand, Vandy has had enough trouble finding their collective ass with both hands and a road map, so I might still have expected Kentucky to pull it together.

Nebraska almost took down Michigan on Saturday. Now they have Iowa in their sights - up 6 with 1:43 left.

Both centers have fouled out. Iowa’s Doyle airballed a three. Huslers missed subsequent free throws. Matt Coatney notes they have missed 16 free throws tonight.

Texas Tech is leading Kansas 59-48 with 1:34 left (KU has been chipping away at TTU’s 20 point lead). If the Raiders can hang on, Shimmy will have her first B12 win.

Villanova lost 79-77 to Penn - that was their only non-conference loss.

Villanova played a weak non-conference schedule, other than their notable home win over Duke early on. They have some good players, notably Hannah Tucker and Kelly Jekot, and Louin inside, but unless they hit their outside shots they are only decent. They are the most overrated RPI team this year.

This weekend they play DePaul and Marquette at home and need at least one if not two wins to salvage their season.

Certainly a surprise, but Western Kentucky is the class of the division.
