In this piece, Chiney Ogwumike wouldn't comment on Donald Trump's views regarding Africa but had a lot to say about her Nigerian parents, her grandfather, and the African continent.

People say "Africa" like it's a homogeneous place. It's an enormous continent, larger than North America, with an very diverse range of cultures.

There are 54 countries in Africa. I have a friend in New York who decided to address her lack of knowledge of Africa by reading a novel written by an author from each of these countries. When I last saw her (early December), she'd read 22. Probably higher now.

I actually minored in African Studies (even back in my day they had this) and had a friend from each of the 4 'corners' of Africa - Libya, Ghana, Ethiopia (then called), and South Africa - and listened to many stories of their homelands. It is indeed amazingly diverse geographically as well as culturally... And unfortunately a lot of ethnic and tribal divisiveness - like the Balkans it goes back centuries and is very difficult to break out of the hatred/mistrust instilled from childhood. Then on top of that are all the outsiders who often play on that divisiveness to get what they want - the natural resources.
