Leonsis believes that he sees a future in sports where attendees who are looking to bet on games can do so right from the bleachers. He even believes that if fans were able to place wagers on WNBA contests that it would drive more interest in women’s basketball as a whole. |
Wait a sec, I thought the Las Vegas Aces couldn't have a sports betting book in their MGM casino. And I know the Connecticut Sun can't have a sports book at the Mohegan Sun casino either. So, I don't see how Leonsis thinks fans can "bet on games can do so right from the bleachers", unless he is not aware of these rules forbidding sports arenas and betting in the same place.

The MGM Grand has a sports book. They will not be accepting bets on Aces games.

I'd be against any big dollar gambling on the WNBA. That's when corruption steps in. I'd rather keep it to a fantasy league level, so that potential new viewers gained might become hooked.

I think it's a great idea if you want to grow the league, and in turn, grow interest in the sport.
And I think it's harder to influence officials and players on in-game betting than on the outcome or point spreads.

Depends what you allow people to bet on. Something like 'who's going to commit the first foul of the third quarter' could be pretty easy to fix.
It's a concept that I've heard multiple times as an idea for major leagues like the NBA and NFL in future if gambling laws open up in the US, so it's not a surprise that it would come up for the WNBA as well. All these leagues want to be in front of the gambling idea so that if someone's making money from it, they're leading the charge. Half the fans in arenas spend the game staring at their phones, so if you can get them to continue giving you money while looking down at the screen then that's an ideal scenario. |

Lots of things can help the league, Ted, such as not shoving your team into a practice facility in a dubious part of town.

In game wagering has become very popular in Las Vegas on many sports, with at least a few sports books already offering it on WNBA games. The wagering is betting on pointspreads and totals that are constantly adjusted throughout the game. There have also been a few attempts to introduce play by play wagering (primarily on football) but these endeavors have failed.
A big issue now, which will become much bigger when the Raiders move to Las Vegas, is controlling phone wagering. Regulators do not want bets to be able to be made from sports venues, and this becomes difficult to block for sports taking place in Nevada. It is expected that by the time the Raiders start playing the geolocation will be able to detect and block such calls.
In any event I really don't believe that the availability of in game wagering would make any difference to the potential attendance. I do believe that an uptick in popularity of the sport would have a corresponding impact on the money wagered and the two may be able to be leveraged for overall benefit, but in game is not the driving force.

I think if the WNBA offered bets that weren't currently available for other sports, it would increase interest.
So being first to market would be an advantage here, I think.

I am not a gambler (unless you count Fan Duel, which as well know is a game of skill). However, I have always thought the logical thing for a sports fan to do would be to bet an amount on home games equal to the ticket price AGAINST the home team. If they win, you are happy because they won. If they lose - you get your money back. What could be better? Ted's idea could be the way to do it. Fans who pay twice the regular ticket price get a refund if the team loses......

Full disclosure: It wasn’t clear which team would be winning the championship. But there’s probably not a question which franchise will be most energized from the new facility.
“We need a home-court advantage,” Mystics Coach and General Manager Mike Thibault said. “We want to feel that the crowd is with us every night. Capital One Arena is a great place to play in, but it’s 20,000 seats. And when you put 8,000 [fans] in, it doesn’t feel like we have an advantage over our visiting teams. When we come here in a year, we will.”
....But the arena could be transformational for the Mystics, which is why Thibault told Leonsis five years ago that the Mystics “need a place of our own.”
“Walking in a building that has built-in energy because it’s full every night changes the mood of everybody. It just does,” he said. “You walk in and you go, ‘This is an event today. This is a thing.’ We could put the same number [of fans] in Capital One, and it feels empty, you know? I think part of it is your players will walk into a place that feels like home every day, and I think that’s a huge advantage mentally. If we do the crowd thing right and we do some other things, we can make it be an intimidating place.” |

So he's going to have 4000 seats. How many will be sold to businesses that will be unused more often than not? There will be a lot of political pressure put on businesses to support this boondoggle in Ward 8. Remember this is all justified by supposedly bringing economic development to the worst part of the city. Businesses that don't even know what the letters W-N-B-A stand for will be buying season tickets for public relations purposes and because the mayor asks them to. No businesses that contract with the city want to be accused of being racist for shunning Ward 8. But that doesn't mean they'll come to the games. Those 1000 empty seats are going to be a lot more obvious in a 4000 seat arena.
