Would love to see the Bruins get the win tonight.

One of my favorite what-if exercises:
Swap coaches and see what this game looks like.

I assume the game looks similar. Both teams are very talented. Stanford has 5 McDonald's All-Americans available today. UCLA has 3 McDonald's All-Americans available today. Again, both teams are very talented.

UCLA got out rebounded in the first half (26-19) and outshot (45.2% to 31.4%), and is just down by 3 at halftime. The Bruins could be in way worse shape. C'mon, UCLA.

At the Cal game. Are Carrington and McPhee both playing?

During the VanDerveer halftime interview with Mary Murphy, someone in the booth adds a small graphic that says she is 13-14 against ranked teams since 2015.

32-29 Stanford at the half in a Canada vs McPhee battle. Stanford opened a 30-18 lead with about 3 minutes left in the half when McPhee sat with 2 pf. UCLA, behind Canada outscored Stanford 11-2 the rest of the way.
UCLA tried to force the ball inside most of the half with little success. Other than McPhee the trees are offensively challenged but they looked like a scoring machine compared to UCLA. 10 Stanford TO's let UCLA stay close.

Stanford is extending the rebounding margin on UCLA, 36-25. If UCLA isn't gonna hit shots (29.8% shooting thus far into the game) and isn't gonna get rebounds, UCLA is not gonna win in Maples while Stanford's horses are available and playing.

Sounds like UCLA is not expending enough energy tonight. I need them nice and tired for Sunday morning.

Sniez hasn't taken a shot in 3 quarters. She was an offensive and driving force against Tennessee. |

One of the luckiest shots I've ever seen, McPhee. |

Total contrast between relying on athleticism and one-on-one play and team ball. Team ball and coaching is winning.

McPhee would be a good star for a WBB movie. She's a charismatic, attractive intense tomboy.

Team ball and coaching and a whole lot of talent (5 McDonald's All-Americans) and a home floor. Put 'em all together and you usually get the win.
Congrats to Stanford.

Umm, pretty sure UCLA, with its #11 ranking against a 6-6 Stanford team was favored, even on the road. Close just isn't a good coach.

I do think the Oregon schools are fortunate to skip the Bay Area trip this season. I wish UCLA had gotten to skip the Bay Area trip this season.

Stanford was favored by computer models that were unaware that Stanford's best players didn't play in its recent losses, and that those same best players were on the floor today.
As to your second statement: UCLA was an underdog last year in Maples, and yet the Bruins won. Was Close not a good coach then? Or did she turn into a not-good coach sometime between then and now?

Well, this just about makes my mind up about Close as a technical coach. UCLA deserved to lose. Their half court offense was incapable of generating high percentage shots. For the second half, I honestly can't recall any pass in the half court offense that penetrated inside 3pt arc. Everything was an attempted drive into a traffic jam or a three point heave. Result 31% shooting.
Meanwhile, Stanford moved the ball, passed crisply, constantly penetrated and shot 52%. |

Of UCLA's 74 shots I'd guess that no more than 15 were high % attempts. For the most part their shots were a mass of circus shots while Stanford was able to find open shooters all night (when they weren't turning it over). All in all a sloppy mess by both teams.
When 2 of your starters (drummer & Hayes) combine to go 1-3 shooting, 1rebound, 0 assists and 0 steals you are in trouble. It looks like once again UCLA will win the prize as the most over-hyped preseason team in D1.
